4 th edition sponsored by CLEAPSS The Gardiner Building, Brunel Science Park, Kingston Lane, Uxbridge UB8 3PQ SSERC 2 Pitreavie Court, Pitreavie Business Park, Dunfermline, Fife KY11 8UB

Who and how? Initial discussions between ASE Safeguards in Science Committee and ASE Primary Science Committee Review of non-UK editions for ideas Writing weekend involving safety experts and primary science practitioners from across the UK, sponsored by CLEAPSS & SSERC

… and then? A conscious attempt to avoid educational language which was specific to different parts of the UK Three successive drafts, seen by a wider group including all members of ASE Safeguards in Science Committee, ASE Primary Science Committee and Primary Science Editorial Board and others

... and it went on Of course, many of the comments were mutually incompatible Drafts sent to government education departments across the UK and to the HSE An election in the middle of this process did not help!

What’s new? A slightly changed sub-title Health and safety in school science and technology for teachers of 3- to 12-year-olds Because there is a new section on Science for under-5s Expanded coverage of Studies out of the classroom, now including gardening and composting

… and More about Ourselves and Hygiene More emphasis on teaching health and safety using science and technology A re-written section on electricity An expanded section on Making things, now also covering textiles, pottery, plaster of Paris

… and A new section on Taking it further for those involved in primary/secondary liaison or with access to laboratory-style accommodation An attempt to rebut such myths as bans on the use of egg boxes and toilet roll centres Most other sections have had at least minor revisions The order has been changed

Freebies The new section on Ourselves and our senses includes an illustrated Safety Code for hand- washing.

This will be available as a poster, free to members as a download from the ASE web site at safety-resources/health-and-safety-primary- science/

… and There are references to articles in Primary Science (Review), eg on Safety and the school pond and Safety in out-of-school science Members will be able to access these on the ASE web site, under the resources/health&safety/primary tab

We are also producing a Welsh language version as a pdf, which will be available as a priced publication from the ASE web site or Booksales

Be safe! INSET pack The 2 nd edition (2002) of the Be safe! INSET Pack can still be used for training teachers, because the main messages remain unchanged There will not be a new edition of the Be safe! INSET Pack BUT the page references are wrong An Update sheet will be available from ASE Booksales or as a download from the ASE web site, free for members

Curriculum requirements When working with tools, equipment and materials, in practical activities and in different environments, including those that are unfamiliar, pupils should be taught: a)about hazards, risks and risk control b)to recognise hazards, assess consequent risks and take steps to control the risks to themselves and others c)to use information to assess the immediate and cumulative risks d)to manage their environment to ensure the health and safety of themselves and others e)to explain the steps they take to control risks. Specific statements in Sc1, BoS and D&T (food only)

Assessing H&S No explicit mention in level statements for Sc or D&T APP includes in AF4 L3 Recognise obvious risks when prompted L4 Identify possible risks to themselves and others L5 Make, and act on, suggestions to control obvious risks to themselves and others
