Mr. Field’s Third Grade Class Welcome, parents!

Welcome to Third Grade!  I will introduce you to third grade and to our classroom.  If you have any questions during my presentation, please feel free to ask.

All About Me  My background  I grew up in Chardon, Ohio.  I live in Fairport Harbor with my wife Sharon and our three children, Christian (8 on 9/28) and Mary (5 yrs), and Emma (2 yrs).  My education  Received my degree in Early Childhood Education from Lake Erie College in 2004  Received my Reading Endorsement from Lake Erie in May ’07  Currently taking classes towards my Masters Degree in Administration

New in Ohio Education  Third Grade Reading Guarantee  Rigor!!

New in Riverside Local  Infinite Campus  New website for grades and student records  Currently unavailable to parents  ??????

My Goals  To give your child the academic and social skills he/she needs to progress to fourth grade.  To provide a supportive and fun classroom environment.  To help your student make new friends and discover new interests.

Classroom Community  Our classroom is a community. In our community, we have rules to help us get along with each other.  Our class rules are:  Work Hard, Always  Treat others as you want to be treated (Golden Rule)  Be respectful of all people  Be Wrong LOUD

Class Subjects  The subjects we cover during third grade are:  Reading and writing  Phonics/ Spelling (Mrs. Ford)  Math  Science (Mrs. Rhomberg)  Social studies (Myself)  Specials (Music, Art, and Gym)  Trimesters 12 weeks of each (Gym, Music, and Art)

A note about Math:  Timed tests in Mr. Field’s class  Climbing the tree, moving our Monkeys  Test value is 50 pts.  Move at your own pace  Why is it important?

Homework  I will assign roughly 60 minutes of homework every night. This includes 20 minutes of reading. I will endeavor to keep homework in this time frame. If it is taking your child longer we can work together to find a solution.  XtraMath, allowed as a math assignment starting next week, Study Island assignments will still be due on Friday  Study Island assignments  Reading and Math every week, the assignment is set and active Monday and will lock on Friday night at midnight  Exception for shortened weeks, assignments will stay active till Saturday at Midnight.

Planner  Planner will be used to record homework assignments and projects. I require that students show parents their planners every night and get a signature.  The reason behind this is to maintain communication between us and keep parents aware of what we are doing.

Book Log/Calendar  Nightly record for assigned 20 minutes of Reading. I ask that this is initialed by parents and it is worth a homework point towards the reading grade. Log must be initialized to receive the points.  (1 point for every 20 minutes assigned. Weekends are worth 3 points.)  Students may read anything; a book, magazine article, newspaper, comic book, etc…  I will check this every day along with the Planner— my hope is that the students will fill out the logs independently, asking for parents to initial.

Make-Up Work  If a student is absent from school, they will have the same number of days to make up work as they missed.  I will send home a “While you were away…” paper with the missing assignments listed. (haven’t started with the early absences)

Projects  There will be periodic projects assigned throughout the school year. These will contain cross curricular exercises and will be due on a specific date. Late projects will be accepted but there will be points subtracted. Any questions regarding projects, please contact me.

Tardiness  School starts at 8:35 A.M.  I take attendance at 8:50 A.M., per office request. However anyone coming in the room after 8:50 is considered tardy. Due to the amount of work we need to accomplish in the third grade, every moment is precious.

Field Trips  Zoo- end of year trip is a definite.  Holden Arboretum  Working on other trips  Gas an issue

Let’s Have a Great Year!
