STRATEGY: Summarize Helps you understand what you have read because you have to figure out what the text is about, identify the most important ideas, and retell the ideas in your own words. Identifying the main ideas and supporting details in a paragraph, passage, or selection can help you summarize.

SKILL: Main Idea and Details The topic tells what the story is about Main ideas are the most important information about the topic The main idea of a paragraph tells what the paragraph is about It may be stated in a topic sentence at the beginning or end of the paragraph. Supporting details give more information about the main idea
