Civil War in Sierra Leone and El Salvador Olaide Ajomagberin, Mackenzie Begley, Emily Crump, Lauren Perkins, Amy Sanborn

Development Growth of economy; using one nation’s resources with a combination of outside assistance (through trade) to help the country prosper

Sierra Leone Revolutionary United Front (RUF) vs. gov’t of President Ahmad Tejan Kabdah Foday Sankoh= former army corporal and leader of RUF, started rebellion Charles Taylor

El Salvador El Salvador was destroyed by a civil war. It was encouraged by the inequality between the poor and the rich. Past President Alfredo Cristiani

History of Sierra Leone: Independence 1961, resulted in unstable gov’t (in & out military dictatorships)  easy for RUF to cause destruction to Pres. Kabdah’s gov’t

History of El Salvador: A period of relative stability during 1900–1930 Repressive dictatorship led to civil war between governments Pressure for reform came from armed resistance from leftists

Compare and Contrast Both rebel groups used guerrilla tactics Many civilians were killed Civilians were in a worse state after the civil war U.S. didn’t become directly involved U.S. became immediatley involved

Civil War effecting Development in Sierra Leone steps back for the already weak economy destroyed the backbone of the economy (workers and crops) and corrupted the govt  more unstable

Civil War effecting Development in El Salvador Economy slowed down during war After peace signing, poverty rates improved Economy is growing, and becoming stabilized

Future for Sierra Leone: Because of the extreme devastation that Sierra Leoneans have faced, recovery will be a gradual process with UN assistance.

Suggestions on How to Improve Conditions in Sierra Leone/ Overcome Barrier UN can encourage democratic gov’t and keep close eye on it to ensure no corruption UN aid to rebuild villages that were destroyed by the RUF

Future for El Salvador: Signed agreements (Mexico, UN) Trying to increase the growth of economy Decrease poverty and crime rate Cutting down on military requirements (war time)

Suggestions on How to Improve Conditions in El Salvador/ Overcome Barrier To create a stable nation, El Salvador needs to secure its government Weak, cannot stand alone (always receiving aid) Improve economy
