God’s Doctrine on Doctrine Doctrine in a Practical Context Discipleship ~ Ministry Royce P. Bell v MV Church, SB MV Church, SB #3 of 4

2 Timothy 4:1-4 1 I solemnly charge you... 2 preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort, with great patience and instruction. 3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine;... they will accumulate for themselves teachers in accordance to their own desires, 4 and will turn away their ears from the truth and will turn aside to myths.

Truth God, the Ultimate Source The Word Revealed by Divine Processes Doctrine Conveying Divine Instruction Recapitulation of the Principle n What is by nature truth, is revealed in and by the Word... n What the Word reveals is conveyed to the learner by sound doctrine (teaching)

“Doctrine” In The Scriptures n Old Testament –What is taught - Deuteronomy 32:2 –What is heard - Isaiah 28:9b, cf. vr. 13 –What is followed - Jeremiah 10:8 (cf. NKJV) n New Testament –The act of teaching - 1 Timothy 4:13, 16; 5:17 –The manner of instruction - Matthew 7:28 –What is “of God” - John 7:16-17, “...he will know of the teaching, whether it is of God or whether I speak from Myself.”

–Nature of Deity »Father, Son, and Holy Spirit –Cosmo- (gony, origins) (logy, theme/teaching) »Creation »Earth/ Heaven order –Nature of man »Role-based definitions »Headship/submission –Revelation and authority »Inspiration, revelation »Nature of the scripture –Scheme of redemption »Belief/Repent/Baptism –Nature/work of church »Collective action: Of saints, locally »Organization of local church, incl. Oversight/ servanthood/members »Finances/Membership/ Discipline/Work/ Worship –Moral instruction and admonition »Individual, inter- personal moral choices »Giving/avoiding offense –Any other matter of Divine revelation

Doctrine and Discipleship 39 And He also spoke a parable to them: “A blind man cannot guide a blind man, can he? Will they not both fall into a pit? 40 A pupil is not above his teacher; but everyone, after he has been fully trained, will be like his teacher. 41 Why do you look at the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye?…” ~Luke 6:39-40

n Note context to verse 45, cf. vr. 46 –Ultimately, all instruction benefits one… –To be “as” the Master is to embrace Who and What He is, Son of God, and Lord: 44 “No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him; and I will raise him up on the last day. 45 It is written in the prophets, ‘And they shall all be taught of God.’ Everyone who has heard and learned from the Father, comes to Me.” ~ John 6:44-45 cf Luke 6:46

Doctrine and Ministry n The emphasis is on the proper exercise of ministry in the Word/Doctrine/Truth –Reason: The tendency to ear tickling –Resolution: Preach sound doctrine, the truth …not fables, myths, disputations or philosophy n The solemn charge is of Divine origin: –It is in the presence of God and the Lord; –It is in view of His imminent coming and judgment to come, cf. Acts 24:25 “...preach the word...make full proof of thy ministry” (2 Timothy 4:2, 5)
