Fish Consumption Assessment Assessment of Kodiak Island Tribes’ Subsistence Consumption

Project Summary  Find Sug’piaq tribal members’ present consumption rates patterns, habits, preparation and cooking methods of fish and other subsistence resources in five villages around Kodiak Island  The national per capita fish consumption rate is about 4.58 grams/person/day of “as prepared” fish and about 6.30 grams/person/day of uncooked is used to establish human health based water quality criteria for toxins  The recommended “safe” fish ingestion rate is only 32 grams per day  Sun’aq is developing forms and a questionnaire

Why Participate?  Consumption for Suq’piaq tribal members could be estimated to be dramatically higher than the national estimates  Increase data and knowledge of tribal fish/subsistence consumption  Increase staff skills in technical assessments and data collection  Increase knowledge of contaminants in subsistence foods and risks associated with consumption  Increase the health of tribal and community members

Training Needs of Interviewers  Hire one or two tribal members in each village to assist with scheduling and conducting interviews  Receive training regarding forms and procedures of the assessment  Willingness to schedule and conduct interviews with Project Manager as monitor with approximately 20 households  Ability to compile data and work with Project Manager to prepare reports from each village

Outcomes of Consumption Assessments  Compile assessment forms from each village  Enter interviews into a database  Send data to statistician for review  Hold teleconference with village partners to share assessment preliminary findings  Develop draft report and submit to EPA and village tribal partners
