Poll Everywhere Don’t forget: You can copy- paste this slide into other presentations, and move or resize the poll.

Today’s Objectives – Yours? What does a ‘hybrid’ course look like? Why/Why not teach a hybrid course? Ideas for in class and online Goals and assessment Begin to design your own course

Don’t forget: You can copy- paste this slide into other presentations, and move or resize the poll.

What is a Hybrid or Blended Learning Course? A course that integrates online and face-to- face activities in a planned pedagogically valuable manner  (Sloan-C Workshop on Blended Learning, 2005 as referenced in Laumakis, 2011)

Don’t forget: You can copy- paste this slide into other presentations, and move or resize the poll.

Benefits : Pedagogical flexibility  Activities complement each other and elaborate on one another Reach ALL students  Learning styles  Flexibility Take advantage of best features of F2F and online learning

Benefits (cont): Increased engagement with coursework and interaction with peers/instructor - because…  ‘Content’ can be delivered online Students prepared for class Automatic online grading Saves space on campus Others?

Objectives and Outcomes Want students to think critically so create assignments with this in mind  Use Bloom’s taxonomy Assignments should relate to course objectives  Course blueprint  How do you know you’ve met objectives? Clear expectations for everything posted numerous times/locations  Rubrics  Attendance & Participation  ‘Netiquette’

Learner-Centered Teaching Face-to-Face Community Building  First Day Exercises (Yours?) Mix it up – not more than minutes on one thing Provide a lot of examples of difficult concepts Demonstration  Have them apply concepts and skills learned online and in class  Teacher demonstrations  Students participate in demonstrations Games  Jeopardy  Others?

Face-to-Face Engagement (cont.) Collaboration  Group think & share, quizzes, puzzles, etc.  Group projects and presentations  Mind mapping (Bubbl.Us, Mindmeister)  Skype with others all over the world  Creating something together  Hands-on with clay, drawing, etc. More examples??? Response Devices and Active Questioning Audio/Visual  Publisher materials  Google Earth  Youtube

Online Engagement Assignments (Again, relate to course objectives)  Create a ______.  Writing assignments  Give them choices  Difficult to plagiarize  Make a screencast showing & talking about their writing assignment Audio/visual presentations, demonstrations, examples  Screencasts of power points  Animated videos (you create/they create?)  Youtube videos as examples

Online Engagement (Cont.) Quizzes  Use Bloom’s higher levels to create questions  Just-in-time-Teaching  Have them prepared to participate when in-class Discussions  Not just for the sake of interaction  Relating to the individual so no duplicate answers Group Collaboration  Online brainstorming (IE: BubblUs, Mindmeister)  Google Docs  Type-with-me  Blogs & Wikis Links to Open Resources, Tech Support

Good to know…. It is extremely time-consuming in beginning Have them hands-on computers, LMS Know your room Clear expectations Put time limits on quizzes, discussion posts Remind, remind, remind Assess student learning Interact and grade regularly Address accessibility issues from start Check yourself throughout

Mid-Semester Survey Results (only 8 responses) How would you rate the QUALITY of this course in comparison to strictly face-to-face classes…? 60% average If you had a choice, would you choose to take another course in the 'blended' format? 63% positive This course compared with the amount of interaction in your face-to-face courses (current or past)? 57% said ‘less than other courses’ 29% same, 14% more Overall satisfaction: 50% were satisfied, 25% neutral, 25% dissatisfied Comments:  “Positives: Kathy is very organized and prepared for the course. Negatives: D2L is very hard for the traditional learner”  “I don’t know but every time I study the quiz is different than the topic that studied.”  “It is a very organized class and fun to be in. I do not have any negative to say about this class. I enjoy coming to class and the discussions online.”

Build Your Own Hybrid Class Which Course? Core concepts & skills you want to develop Course Blueprint  Objectives Text(s) or other materials Content & Activities (In class/Online) Assignments (In class/Online) Resources Assessment
