doc.: IEEE / 0052r0 Submission January 2011 Slide 2 Abstract This document proposes a method to protect the performance of advanced receivers when an MU type feedback is used for an SU beamformed transmission Sameer Vermani, Qualcomm

doc.: IEEE / 0052r0 Submission Introduction: Max Nss for SU BF For advanced receivers, BF transmissions beyond a certain number of spatial streams can be harmful, e.g., –In the case of a 4Tx AP, a 4 Rx STA with an ML receiver might be better off receiving a 4 ss open loop transmission compared to a Tx BF one We want to give the STA control of the max number of spatial streams it wants to receive in a SU Tx BF transmission –Goes with the philosophy of giving SU BF control to the beamformee Although an SU type feedback is under complete control of the beamformee, this is not necessarily true for MU type feedback –Beamformer might re-use MU type feedback to do an SU transmission January 2011 Sameer Vermani, QualcommSlide 3

doc.: IEEE / 0052r0 Submission Max Nss for SU-BF Have a field which can tell the beamformer the maximum number of spatial streams a STA wants to receive in a SU BF transmission Simple option is to make “Max Nss for SU BF’ (when using an MU type feedback) field a part of operating mode field –STA looks at the “number of sounding dimensions” of the beamformer and decides a “Max Nss for SU BF” Depending upon its receiver implementation However, currently there is no explicit mechanism for the beamformer to advertise the “number of sounding dimensions” –Will need a new sub-field in the Transmit BF capability which does this January 2011 Sameer Vermani, QualcommSlide 4

doc.: IEEE / 0052r0 Submission Use of Operating Mode field The Operating Mode field in a Notify Operating Mode frame can be used for conveying “Max Nss for SU BF” (once number of sounding LTFs is known) Use Operating Mode field as follows: –B7 is changed to “Max Nss for SU BF present” field. When B7 = 0, Rx Nss indicates the supported number of spatial streams When B7 = 1, Rx Nss indicates “Max Nss for SU BF ” –Channel Width field is reserved in this case to avoid any confusion January 2011 Sameer Vermani, QualcommSlide 5 Suggested Operating Mode field

doc.: IEEE / 0052r0 Submission Conclusions To protect the performance of advanced receivers, we need the following: –‘Max Nss for SU BF’ as an Operating Mode sub-field –‘Number of sounding dimensions’ as a transmit side capability This proposal is only relevant when an MU type feedback is requested and re-used for SU transmission –STA is allowed to over-ride ‘Max Nss for SU BF’ value using an SU type feedback January 2011 Sameer Vermani, QualcommSlide 6

doc.: IEEE / 0052r0 Submission Pre-motion 1 Do you agree to add the following two sub-fields and modify the spec framework document accordingly ? –‘Max Nss for SU BF’ (applicable only when using an MU type feedback) as an STA operating mode –‘Number of sounding dimensions’ as a transmit side capability January 2011 Sameer Vermani, QualcommSlide 7

doc.: IEEE / 0052r0 Submission Pre-motion 2 Do you agree with the use of operating mode field as shown on slide 5 of this document to convey the ‘Max Nss for SU BF’ and modify the spec framework document accordingly ? January 2011 Sameer Vermani, QualcommSlide 8
