Study Guide #7 1) Identify and define 2 examples of polical corruption in the early 1800’s 2) Identify and define 3 reform movements and their leaders in the early 1800’s

2) Identify two improvements or changes in the North that contributed to an atmosphere of needed change, by the government and citizens. Improvements in Transportation (Americans could move around more easily and trade b/t regions) Erie Canal- connected New York City w. the Great Lakes/West Immigration- cheap workers for factories *American is turning into a manufacturing and cash-crop economy

3) Briefly explain the election of 1824 and the Corrupt Bargain 4 candidates for President Andrew Jackson won the most votes but did not have a majority in Electoral College 12th Amendment- House of Representatives elects the Pres. Corrupt Bargain Henry Clay (4th place Pres. Candidate) tells his supporters to vote for John Quincy Adams, Adams wins the Presidency and Clay becomes Sec. of State Jackson claims a Corrupt Bargain because he won the most votes and lost election, while Adams and Clay had some kind of a deal

5) Define spoils system (AKA Patronage) Rewarding political supporters with political jobs and power What is the problem with this system Inexperienced people get jobs based on who they know and know very little about government

Stated the Cherokee could stay on their land Jackson ignored the decision and forced the Cherokee to move Trail of Tears- forced march of Cherokee to Oklahoma (15,000 moved, ¼ died from starvation and exhaustion) How do you think Americans reacted to the march? Why was Jackson not impeached for not enforcing the court decision?
