HOMELESS STREET- INVOLVED …a false community based on survival and lacking hope. initial street allure/ street addiction The barriers to escape intensify the earlier problems.

SYSTEM OF STREET-INVOLVEMENT The street-involved community is undergirded by substitute support systems: Starlight Ministries, Emmanuel Gospel Center, January 2012 hard core addiction anger loss of trust loss of hope low self esteem mental illness post traumatic stress barriers to escape survival mentality only care for myself barriers to escape 3. HOMELESS STREET- INVOLVED initial street allure/ street addiction SUBSTITUTE SUPPORT SYSTEMS  agencies, govt, non-profit  hospitals/clinics  law enforcement  shelters  volunteers  other professionals  faith-based ministries  outreach workers  church groups [compartmentalized] These tend to be compart- mentalized, each dealing with a different aspect of the person’s life. Some of these also tend to maintain the street-involved community rather than provide a pathway out. What is needed to help people make the transition off the streets toward to a holistically healthy and balanced life?

SYSTEM OF STREET-INVOLVEMENT The pathway out is a RELATIONSHIP: Starlight Ministries, Emmanuel Gospel Center, January 2012 hard core addiction anger loss of trust loss of hope low self esteem mental illness post traumatic stress barriers to escape survival mentality only care for myself 3. HOMELESS STREET- INVOLVED initial street allure/ street addiction SUBSTITUTE SUPPORT SYSTEMS  agencies, govt, non-profit  hospitals/clinics  law enforcement  shelters  volunteers  other professionals [compartmentalized] barriers to escape  faith-based ministries  outreach workers  church groups 4. PATHWAY OUT RELATIONSHIP A street-involved person forms a relationship with a caring person who offers hope, resources, and empathy. Each person is unique and faces personal issues which they must resolve themselves. one person at a time

SYSTEM OF STREET-INVOLVEMENT First Engine: Personal Breakthrough Starlight Ministries, Emmanuel Gospel Center, January 2012 anger loss of hope mental illness post traumatic stress survival mentality only care for myself 3. HOMELESS STREET- INVOLVED 4. SYSTEM OF STREET-INVOLVEMENT As the individual cycles through these steps, he or she begins to discover his or her “NEW OK.” Starlight Ministries, Emmanuel Gospel Center, January PATHWAY OUT RELATIONSHIP The GOAL is to regain balance in the 5 life dynamics:  physical  emotional  social preparation contemplation action maintenance relapse DECISION/COMMITMENT  gains housing  enters detox program  joins church community  applies for job  etc. (+) hope PERSONAL BREAK- THROUGH “Stages of Change” GAINS NEW COMMUNITY learns to love him/ herself associates with positive people learns to love others gains hope/ courage repeat cycle 5. NEW OK  vocational  spiritual (-) high risk of failure The two engines provide the means to rebuild each of these broken life dynamics to help the individual regain balance.

SYSTEM OF STREET-INVOLVEMENT Relapse is a constant threat. Starlight Ministries, Emmanuel Gospel Center, January PATHWAY OUT RELATIONSHIP The NEW OK needs constant support because the individual can slip back at any time. preparation contemplation action maintenance relapse DECISION/COMMITMENT  gains housing  enters detox program  joins church community  applies for job  etc. (+) hope PERSONAL BREAK- THROUGH “Stages of Change” GAINS NEW COMMUNITY learns to love him/ herself associates with positive people learns to love others gains hope/ courage repeat cycle 5.
