ARIZONA PINK BOLLWORM ERADICATION 2008 PROGRAM UPDATE THROUGH AUGUST 30, 2008
AREA AREA AREA ARIZONA PBW ERADICATION AREAS
COTTON ACRES BY COUNTY
Here you can see the sticks in the ground.
All three transplanters going at once.
Here is one of the Arizona cotton growers PBW SIT planes in Coolidge, AZ.
Here is a look at the inside of the plane, which houses the machine used to drop the sterile insects.
This shows the auger [what the insects fall into and are “churned” out on top of cotton fields].
Here you can see Michelle Walters, USDA, taking one of the boxes of PBW out of the container. They are transported in orange boxes inside of the metal drop boxes. Triangular “cooler packs” are removed prior to placing them into the plane.
Off they go…. Over the cotton fields!
Here is a printed flight map. The blue lines show where the plane has flown; the pink is when they are releasing moths. The green, yellow and red squares are cotton fields.

Here are one of the PBW traps collected from the field.
Barbara Boron, ACRPC, counts the number of native and sterile moths of the traps that are processed at our Phoenix Office.
On occasion, a moth will have to be very closely examined to determine whether or not it is a sterile PBW.
Questionable specimens are carefully archived after identification.
