Characteristics of the Moon Earth Science Lesson 2 TEKS5.12A & 5.6A
The moon
Lithosphere The rocky surface of the Earth
The moon’s rocky surface is covered by craters.
Atmosphere: The pocket of air that surrounds the Earth The moon has no atmosphere because it has less gravity than Earth. No atmosphere means no weather and no weathering.
Hydrosphere: All the water on the surface of the Earth and underground, including ice and water vapor The moon has NO water!
Axis: an imaginary line running from the North Pole to the South Pole through the center of the Earth. The moon has an axis also.
Rotation: the spinning of a planet or moon on its axis. The Earth rotates on its axis once every 24 hours or 1 day. The Moon rotates on its axis once every days.
Orbit: The path one object takes around another object in space. The Earth orbits the sun once every 365 days or one year. The Moon orbits the Earth once every days.
Tide: The rise and fall of the water level of the ocean near the shore that is caused by the pull of gravity of the moon (changes every 6 hours) High tide 2 times a day Low tide 2 times a day
Phases: The different shapes the moon appears during the lunar cycle which repeats every days.
