Why The Burke/Lonvig Model is Green IT From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Green computing is the study and practice of using computing resources efficiently. The primary objective of such a program is to account for the triple bottom line, an expanded spectrum of values and criteria for measuring organizational (and societal) success. The goals are similar to green chemistry; reduce the use of hazardous materials, maximize energy efficiency during the product's lifetime, and promote recyclability or biodegradability of defunct products and factory waste. Modern IT systems rely upon a complicated mix of people, networks and hardware; as such, a green computing initiative must be systemic in nature, and address increasingly sophisticated problems. Elements of such a solution may comprise items such as end user satisfaction, management restructuring, regulatory compliance, disposal of electronic waste, telecommuting, virtualization of server resources, energy use, thin client solutions, and return on investment (ROI). The Green IT Case

The Burke/Lonvig Model concept requires a lot of server space with high degree of reliability. The Burke/Lonvig Model therefore is placed on a server in the huge Planet Data Center in Dallas, Texas. The Burke/Lonvig Model has 10,000 MB server space at its disposal in Dallas, Texas. It has a bandwidth available of 100,000 MB. Print and Manufacturing on demand and CUSTOMIZATION – The Green IT Case Manufacturing on demand and CUSTOMIZATION means that products are not kept in stock. No manufacturing of products for stocks and no need for stock buildings. Both have a positive impact on the environment. Why are manufacturing on demand and CUSTOMIZATION considered GREEN IT Manufacturing on demand and CUSTOMIZATION means that products that can not be sold never are produced, which have an obvious positive impact on the environment. The Green IT Case

Shipment per order? You might claim that print on demand and manufacturing on demand might have some negative impacts on the environment because of shipment per order. About the 2 major players on this marked I can tell: Recently Zazzle.com has established Zazzle.co.uk to minimize shipment costs to Europe. Cafepress has a Canadian, an Australian and an UK web site. But the products comes from USA. Customs duties and VAT are added to products when they enter into Europe. A new European player becomes better and better. Maybe Spreadshirt.com from Leipzig, Germany can match the American suppliers. Spreadshirt.coms prices are in EURO including VAT. Inside EU there are no customs duties. Very mu more comfortable to European Customers. Im testing it. The Green IT Case Print and Manufacturing on demand and CUSTOMIZATION – The Green IT Case

The open source initiative (OSI). Open source is a development method for software that harnesses the power of distributed peer review and transparency of process. The promise of open source is better quality, higher reliability, more flexibility, lower cost, and an end to predatory vendor lock-in. The Open Source Initiative (OSI) is a non-profit corporation formed to educate about and advocate for the benefits of open source and to build bridges among different constituencies in the open-source community. One of our most important activities is as a standards body, maintaining the Open Source Definition for the good of the community. The Open Source Initiative Approved License trademark and program creates a nexus of trust around which developers, users, corporations and governments can organize open-source cooperation. The Burke/Lonvig Model will use Open Source Initiative Approved License software whenever appropriate. If you do not have PowerPoint on your computer you can use OpenOffice.org which is free of charge. Click on and download the OpenOffice package. The Open Source Initiatives are Green IT.
