Business Drivers for IPv6 John King

Critical Factors Why do we need to deploy IPv6? What are the financial implications? –Of deploying IPv6 –Of not deploying IPv6 What will be the effect on customers? When do we need to have IPv6 deployed?

Rationale for IPv6 The growth of the Internet has been phenomenal and shows little signs of slowing! But the basic unifying protocol (IP) that links applications to IP networks is starting to show its age and hamper growth IPv6 builds on the success of today’s IPv4 protocol by solving fundamental problems IPv6 will be required, in the long term, to enable the continued expansion and evolution of the Internet. IP Applications VoIP surfing gaming Networks ATM Fibre Copper Satellite

Drivers and Timings Why an organisation needs IPv6 –Commercial drivers –Political drivers –Technical drivers When will IPv6 be required –IPv4 address exhaustion (probably within the next 10 years) –Migration to IPv6 Capable Operating Systems –Devices support

Why - Commercial Strategic –Support future needs of customers –Be ready to support future IPv6 migration –Protect new infrastructure investment –Ability to grow the network to support new services and opportunities IPv6 Cost savings –Private address management –Network management –Fault diagnosis Longer-term savings! – Migration costs – Co-existence – Training V

Why - Commercial IPv4 Address Exhaustion –Predictions range from 2008 – 2017 –Should assume that within 10 years you wont be able to get route-able IPv4 addresses –Auditing of IPv4 allocations may become costly –Global market place for route- able IPv4 addresses? –Private IPv4 addressing limited to about 16 million.

Why - Political US Department of Defense mandate to migrate to IPv6 by Other US government agencies have been requested to follow suit. Japanese ISPs supporting IPv6 today. Incentives provided by government. South Korean governments mandating IPv6 migration. Big push to deploy IPv6 in China by end of 2006.

Why - Technical New Service Opportunities –Efficient & Secure IP Mobility –Simpler Peer-to-peer applications development and deployment VoIP Network Gaming Easy for novice installation –Remote Network Management Home Network Correspondent

Why - Technical Ability to uniquely address Enterprise networks – particularly those that are geographically distributed. Potentially easier to re-number after mergers Internal enterprise security –protect revenue Intranet Internet FIREWALL Mail DNS WWW Unsecured comms Intranet Internet FIREWALL Mail DNS WWW Secure IPv6 network

When Dependent upon the factors that affect your business. –Market/customer intelligence Migration should take a number of years to be most cost effective. –including network/application trials Ensure no detrimental effect on existing business!

When - Transition Part of normal equipment upgrade plans –Significant percentage of network equipment is IPv6 capable –BUT check for required features –Transparent to customers –Trials Operational Support Systems –May need significant migration time Personnel –Training and ‘on the job’ familiarisation Be Prepared for a long period of Co-existence!!

When – Vendor Support Cisco Juniper Hitachi Ericsson All have mature IPv6 offerings. Can build operational Core networks now.

When – Applications Almost all Linux variants are IPv6 capable Microsoft XP has IPv6 stack and support for IE Microsoft Vista/Longhorn fully IPv6 capable – end of 2006 Gaming devices –Sony –Xbox Consumer devices
