What is Induction? Charging by induction is where a charged object causes electrons to move inside another object, without them touching. No charges move.
Presentation transcript:

Initially, each object is neutral (i.e. each has = numbers of protons & electrons)

Rubbing the balloon on the shirt transfers electrons. Due to friction, the shirt & balloon are now oppositely charged.

-The negative field on the balloon repels the electrons in the ruler; the ruler electrons move as far away as they can get. -This results in the ruler having a positive end and a negative end. -Overall, though, the net charge on the ruler is still zero. When the charged balloon gets near the neutral ruler, ruler becomes polarized.

The positive end of the ruler has a positive field, which is attracted to the negative field the balloon has. As a result of the interactions of the fields, a force is generated. The ruler moves toward the balloon

When the balloon is removed, the negative field is no longer present. The force disappears. The electrons in the ruler go back to their normal positions.
