The Egyptian soul was divided into 5 parts, which were the: Ka - a person’s life force Ba - the person’s personality Sheut - a person’s shadow Ren - a person’s name Ib - a person’s heart
Human’s personality Responsible for guiding conscience Only humans and gods had a ba Fly with person to the Hall of Judgment If body was damaged it couldn’t return
Life force and spiritual twin Followed person around during life like shadow Merged with body after death Traveled back to body with ba every night from land of the living If body was damaged it couldn’t return Pharaohs could have multiple kas
If you were a ba, your jobs would be to: Guide a person’s conscience during life Guide the person to Hall of Judgment after death Make up all qualities of that person that are non-physical Follow a person around during life like shadow Eat offerings made by people Give the person spiritual essence If you were a ka, your jobs would be to:
Sheut – the person’s shadow; person could not exist without it Ib – heart; weighed against Feather of Truth; center of thought and emotion Ren – name; as long as your name was spoken and remembered, you could have an afterlife
