E-MOBILITY – CHALLENGES FROM A PREMIUM MANUFACTURERS PERSPECTIVE. CIRED 2011 Frankfurt, June 6th, 2011

BMW GROUP‘S VISION. BMW Group is the leading provider of premium vehicles and mobility services.

E MOBILITY WILL ACHIEVE A RELEVANT MARKET SHARE. Internal combustion engines will increase till The share of electric drive trains will raise continiously. In 2020 the market share of EV (BEV, PHEV) is projected between 5-15 %.

BMW GROUP‘S PRODUCT STRATEGY.

MINI E AND BMW ActiveE SERVE AS KEY LEARNING PROJECTS OF OUR MEGACITY VEHICLE. Megacity Vehicle MINI E BMW ActiveE Use of renewable energy. Strengths and weaknesses. Transfer scenarios. User behaviour.Market potential. Demands of e-infrastructure. Acceptance

VehiclePurpose Design LifeDrive lightweight concept 4-seater Usable trunk space Drivetrain Rear motor Rear wheel drive Battery Lithium-Ion Battery Active cooling THE BMW i3.

VehiclePurpose Design sportscar LifeDrive lightweight concept 2+2 seats Drivetrainsmall combustion engine plug-in hybrid plus electric motor Battery Lithium-Ion Battery Active Cooling THE BMW i8.

LIFEDRIVE ARCHITECTURE. LifeDrive architecture allows ideal integration of the electric drivetrain and breaks the weight spiral for electric vehicles.

PLANT NETWORK. The BMW Group and the joint venture set up with the SGL Group are investing a total of €530 million in the project. A total of over 1,000 jobs will be created as a result of the investment. Leipzig Dingolfing Drive production Landshut JV Wackersdorf CFRP fabrication MCV assembly CFRP alignment + recycling CFRP fabrication Moses Lake, Washington State Carbon fiber JV

E-MOBILITY GOES BEYOND AND REQUIRES A HOLISTIC SYSTEM. BEV Power Infrastructure Batteriy (e.g. 2nd Life) Managed Charging, V2G Energy and Grid Management Charge at Home & Work (Wallbox) Semi- / public charging infrastructure Charging Services Recycling (materials, components) Sales and Leasing BEV Energy Package …further

A SUSTAINABLE MOBILITY NEEDS AN APPROACH TAKING INTO ACCOUNT DIFFERENT RESPONSIBILITIES. v  The carbon footprint of an electric vehicle is determined by the power generation and the national energy policy.  The automobile manufacturer focuses on the vehicle‘s efficiency and its capability to interact with the grid.  A contribution to climate protection can only be achieved by an comprehensive approach.  The later has to meet customer‘s acceptance.

MANAGED CHARGING IS A CHANCE FOR SUSTAINABLE MOBILITY AND ENERGY SUPPLY. v  Managed charging enables off- peak charging.  Managed charging defines the requirements of charging with renewable energy.  The MINI E field trial shows that customers evaluate managed charging as positive (71%) and are willing to use it.

E-MOBILITY INFRASTRUCTURE. v  The e-mobility infrastructure will develop in parallel to the volume increase of electric vehicles.  All customer use patterns have to be addressed to suceed in e-mobility.  Therefore, different charging technologies (AC / DC) should be deployed.

AC / DC CHARGING INFRASTRUCTURE. v  The deployment of charging infrastructure should be based on customer‘s preference and use patterns.  DC charging is seen as an appropriate public charging infrastructure.

REQUIREMENTS ON E-MOBILITY INFRASTRUCTURE. v Standards Grid- and Load Management Charging technologie: AC /DC Easy and fair access  E-Mobility fosters new mobility services.  These new business models have to consider customer‘s need and preferences.

CONCLUSION. With respect to sustainable mobility BMW Group will go ahead on both – further improvements on conventional technologies and continuous development on alternative drive train technologies. Beyond, increasing urbanisation will change individual mobility. Therefore BMW Group ‘s vision is to be a leading provider of premium car and premium mobility services. E-mobility needs a comprehensive approach between manufacturers, utilities, infrastructure and politics.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION.

BMW GROUP BUILDS MOBILITY OF THE FUTURE IN LEIPZIG. Expansion of the Leipzig plant to make it the first location in Germany equipped to handle the large-scale production of zero- emission electric cars. Around €400 million will be invested at the plant in new buildings and machinery and some 800 jobs will be created in the process up to 2013.
