Turning the tide: Not without prisons! Promoting comprehensive national HIV responses

Turning the HIV tide for people in prisons  30 million people incarcerated each year  HIV prevalence always higher in prison than in the community up- to 50 times (Mauritius)  HIV prevalence in women prisons almost always higher than in men prisons.  50-80% of deaths in prisons reported to be due to TB (HIV)  The proportion of injecting drug users/ drug dependant people among the prison population can be very high up to 50%  High risk work environment for staff especially for TB and also for HIV

Treatment, care and support 4. Prevention, diagnosis and treatment of tuberculosis 5. Prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV 6. Condom programmes 7. Prevention and treatment of sexually transmitted infections 8. Prevention of sexual violence 9. Drug dependence treatment 10. Needle and syringe programmes 11.
