Topic 2: Getting to grips with BP 15/10/13

Outline  Find this stuff  What went well last week in the debate  Points of Information  First-Half structure/pointers  Second-Half role fulfilment

We’re live! 

Last Week  You Rocked!  Fantastic grasp of basic BP elements  Public speaking skills  Quality arguments  Fruitful judging discussion  Room for some Improvement: Media + Last weeks topic

Points of Information  Can only be given between 1-4 mins. A loud bang will signify this.  1 POI per speech: 1) Time is your currency, do not give it to other teams!!! 2) You want minimal disruption to your structure and flow when you are speaking.   Taking 0 is better than taking 2  To summarise: Your speech, your time, your floor. POI’s are a reluctant necessity where due to role fulfilment requirements it is advised you take 1. Any more than this inhibits your ability to put forward persuasive argumentation in a substantial and clear manner.

First Half Structure/ Pointers  Use this table!!!  Introduction of points and Conclusions – it sounds like a thing  Distinction between rebuttal and substantive  Attack all opponents points  Hypothetical from last weeks debate  From last week  In practice: Structure of 1 st half speech Introduce your substantive points Rebuttal previous speakers points Explain and Analyse your substantive points Conclude by summarising your points

Second Half Structure/Pointers  No knew material must be in Summary speeches. Team line. Teamwork.  Structure:  Extension says new stuff, summation contextualises it.  From last weeks debate… Extension Speech Introduce extension point 1/2 Rebuttal: Pick the most important arguments which need to be taken down Explain extension point 1 Explain extension point 2 (if here is one) Summarise your extension arguments

What the hell do Summations do then !?  If this is our point – how do I make sure it stands?  Attack the counterpoints, implicit or explicit in opponents arguments which challenge your extension and case  2-3 themes to pick up  Last week  In practice: Structure of a sum Introduce 2/3 points of clash 1 st point of clash We said Here is why we’re right They said Here is why they are wrong 2 nd point of clash We said Here is why were right They said Here is why they are wrong 3 rd point of clash We said Here is why we are right They said Here is why they are wrong

Conclusion  POI’s – Take 1, no more  1 st half – Clear structure  2 nd half – Get all new stuff out in extension  2 nd half – 2/3 themes in Summation – you say/ we say
