11 Why Coaching Matters

“Feedback makes for intentionality— which makes practice effective.” (Uncommon Impact) Coaching does not have to be linked to authority – you help your district/ school leaders improve through coaching even without authority over the districts. 12

Four Rules for Getting Better Jot down the definitions on page 1.

14 Four Rules for Getting Better 1.Practice the 20 Identify the 20 percent of things you could work on that will deliver 80 percent of the value.

15 Four Rules for Getting Better 2. Isolate the Skill Break down the larger skill into isolated skills for practice.

16 Four Rules for Getting Better 3. Name It Give each skill a “sticky” name or phrase that will mean something to everyone.

17 Four Rules for Getting Better 4. Call Your Shots Model the skills, practice providing and receiving feedback and determine the action plan.

18 Four Rules for Getting Better 1.Practice the 20 2.Isolate the Skill 3.Name It 4.Call Your Shots Look for these rules in this model activity from Courtney and Tim; jot down notes on page 2 about where you see them.

Practice Activity

20 Practice Activity Choose a practice activity prompt: 1) “We need help with Common Core implementation. What can your network team do to help us?” -or- 2) “In our district, most teachers are being rated on their observations as ‘effective,’ but their student growth scores don’t support this. What should we do?” Refer to worksheet page 3 for activity instructions

Report Out Did you practice the 4 skills in these activities? What did you learn about practice last night and tonight that you will go back and use? 21

Closing and Reflection: What’s Your 20? Refer to worksheet page 5.
