Robert M. Martin Elementary Birthday Celebration

Purpose - Reasons to Celebrate Students will understand that Mr. Robert M. Martin’s life was important by learning about his life. Students will learn from Mr. Martin’s life about ways his family, friends, and themselves can: – feel proud about our school. – decide how they want to live. – decide how they can help make our school a wonderful place to learn.

Who Was Mr. Robert Myrl Martin? He was born in Dodge City, Kansas. He passed away at the age of 49 with cancer.

“He was a husband.” Bob and Irene Martin were married for 28 years. They met at Southwestern College.

“He was a father.” Mr. and Mrs. Martin had two daughters:  Kelli Martin  Chelli Cranmer

“He was a teacher.” Mr. Martin taught 4 th, 5 th, and 6 th grade students in Atchison, Haysville, Hutchison, and Cheney, Kansas.

“He was a principal.”

As a principal, he had fun. He played the part of Charlie Brown in a play.

As a principal, he believed he should continue learning. Mr. Martin at an educational convention

Mr. Martin was the principal of Andover Elementary School for 14 years ( ). He was the principal of Andover Primary School for 5 years ( ).

In 1987, while serving as a principal of Andover Elementary, Mr. Martin helped design Andover Primary School. (This building is now called Robert M. Martin Elementary.)

On Monday, May 11, 1992, the school board recognized Mr. Martin with a 19 year service award. Mr. Martin, and daughters Chelli and Kelli

“He was a friend.” As a friend he gave many items as gifts that he made from wood.

As a friend, Mr. Martin loved and cared for his dog named Munchkin.

He was a friend to many families who lost their homes in a tornado April (Mr. Martin is pictured with students. “Thanks” is expressed to Walmart for toy donations.)

As a friend, he would do fun things for people. One day, Mr. Martin dressed like an “Easter Bunny” for children in the community.

For what else was he known?

He enjoyed gardening.

…remembering… He called the students “Munchkins”. His favorite color was red. His favorite food was steak and potatoes. His favorite music was by the group Abba.

…remembering… He often smiled and enjoyed what he was doing. People liked to spend time with him. He loved working for students and really cared for them. He was always there for anyone who needed him. He tried to help teachers do a good job.

…remembering… Reading was very important to him. He had students climb on beanbags outside of his office to read to him. He read stories to students. He gave students a button “I read to Mr. Martin” as a reward.

…remembering… He liked to watch and tape educational programs on TV. He called each student by name.

Remembering Mr. Martin… On November 2, 1992 the name of Andover Primary was changed. On June 2, 1993 a special dedication ceremony was held to show and celebrate the name change.

The school’s name was changed from Andover Primary to…

…Robert M. Martin Primary.

In the fall of 1996, Andover Intermediate and Martin Primary were renamed Martin Primary South and Martin Primary North. Again, this was done to remember Mr. Martin. MPN MPS

Remembering Mr. Martin… On May, 2000, the board renamed our school to Robert M. Martin Elementary.

Learning from Mr. Martin… His wife… Mrs. Irene Martin is currently a teacher at Butler County Community College. She often plays the piano for our music programs and she serves as a substitute teacher at our school.

Learning from Mr. Martin… His daughter… Chelli Cranmer is a teacher at Andover High School. Her two children are Catherine (age 11), who attends Andover Middle School, and Corey (age 9), who attends Robert M. Martin Elementary.

Learning from Mr. Martin… His daughter… Kelli Martin is a day care provider. Her two children are: Robby (age 10) and Rebekah (age 6). who attend Robert M. Martin Elementary.

Learning from Mr. Martin… We learned that Mr. Martin believed reading was important. We can help make reading important by joining a book club in his honor.

How the Book Club Works: Your generous donation will go towards the purchase of a book or set of books depending on the level of membership selected. Membership Levels: Munchkins $5-$10 Eager Readers $11-$30 Book Worms $31- unlimited

Your Membership Includes: Book or books dedicated from you will be added to the Martin/Meadowlark Elementary library. A dedication bookplate will be placed in the book(s) your donation provides. Book club members will receive “I am a Martin Munchkin” button style pin. Book club members will have their name added to an annual membership roster.

Who Selects the Books? Our librarian can make the selection based on what is needed. You may help select your donation from a book “wish” list that is available in the library.

How do I become a member? Complete a membership form. Submit this to our library or school office. You will be contacted.
