PaSDC: The Commonwealth’s Official Source for Population and Socioeconomic Statistics Class Overview: Intro to the Pennsylvania State Data Center Decennial Census The American Community Survey Population Estimates Program Extract and download data from American FactFinder

The PaSDC Established in 1981 by Executive Order of the Governor We are the Commonwealth’s Official Source for Population and Socio-Economic Statistics Located at Penn State Harrisburg within the Institute of State and Regional Affairs (Church Hall) We are a cost recovery operation PaSDC: The Commonwealth’s Official Source for Population and Socioeconomic Statistics

The Decennial Census The census is a count of everyone living in the United States every 10 years. Taken every 10 years since Mandated by the U.S. Constitution and participation is required by law. Mission: Count everyone once, only once, and in the right place

PaSDC: The Commonwealth’s Official Source for Population and Socioeconomic Statistics Census Data are used to: Distribute Congressional seats to states and determine state legislative boundaries Make decisions at every level of government Distribute $400 billion in federal funds to communities each year

PaSDC: The Commonwealth’s Official Source for Population and Socioeconomic Statistics Census 2010 Census 2010 was short-form ONLY. –Shortest Census questionnaire in modern history. –Takes less than 10 minutes to complete. American Community Survey –Now the premier source for Socio-economic data

PaSDC: The Commonwealth’s Official Source for Population and Socioeconomic Statistics American Community Survey A large, continuous demographic survey –Produces annual and multi-year estimates of the characteristics of the population and housing –Produces characteristics, not a population count –Produces information for small areas including tracts, block groups and population subgroups - updated every year Key component of re- engineered 2010 census

PaSDC: The Commonwealth’s Official Source for Population and Socioeconomic Statistics American Community Survey How Does it Work? The American Community Survey uses moving averages to collect data for small areas: –Continuous surveying, ‘rolled up’ into one-year, three-year or five-year averages (multi-year estimates). –For example: Averages for include results collected in 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010 and January 1, 2007– December 31, 2011

PaSDC: The Commonwealth’s Official Source for Population and Socioeconomic Statistics What is a Survey? A survey uses data gathered from a sample of the target population to represent the rest of the population. Survey-based datasets usually include much more detail.
