Provincial WASH Committees now able to report efficiently and effectively courtesy of support from GAA. S&H Taskforce through support from WSSCC working on developing an operational strategy for the S&H Strategy. PDI for newly procured B’ Type Bush Pump spares now a mandatory component of water service delivery. RWP now gathered momentum across all the 33 districts. MAJOR HIGHLIGHTS:

In Manicaland, Ministry of Health is stepping up community based surveillance structures in preparation for the rainy season. Mat N & Mash West Provinces currently experiencing a marked fall in incidences of WASH related disasters. With the onset of the rainy season now imminent CPU adviced that it will soon be scheduling preparedness meetings against floods. EPIDEMIOLOGICAL OVERVIEW:

DEVELOPMENTAL ACTIVITIES BY GOVERNMENT AND PARTNERS: (Donors, Non Governmental Organizations, Private Sector, Community Based Organizations)

1. ADVOCACY-2013 NSW and GHWD commemorations planned for UMP- October THEME: ZOD + Handwashing With Soap = Diarrhoeal Free Communities. RURAL WASH SUB-SECTOR:

2.IRWSSP (Government funded) - being implemented in NINE districts across all EIGHT provinces and generally progressing well. Major focus is on demand led sanitation, borehole rehabilitation and capacity building. Covered Districts are Mutare and Mutasa (Manicaland); UMP (Mash East); Guruve (Mash Central); Nyaminyami (Mash West); Mberengwa (Midlands); Bubi (Mat North); Matobo (Mat South); Chiredzi (Masvingo). 3. RWP-District sensitisation and planning meetings completed in all 33 districts. Cascading of project activities to sub district levels is yet to commence. SaFPHHE Training of Trainers (ToT) is on-going- 13/33 District Teams Trained so far. Baseline study has been completed. RURAL WASH SUB-SECTOR:

4. RWIMS- SNV continues to support piloting of the RWIMS in Manicaland. Reflection meetings held with all the 7 districts last week identified newly sworn in Councillors as a sustainable vehicle for transmitting information from Villages/Wards to the district Database. Plans are to have the database launched as a national system in November. RURAL WASH SUB-SECTOR:

5.Activities by other Partners - Significant involvement of a number of partners in areas of: Construction of sand dams, WASH Governance, Sanitation & Hygiene Promotion at household and institutional levels, Shallow well rehabilitation, Borehole drilling and rehabilitation, Capacity building and Rehabilitation of piped water systems in new resettlement areas RURAL WASH SUB-SECTOR:

1.Streangthening WASH Activities at Provincial Level-The UWSSC at Provincial level is currently not active across all the 10 Provinces. Plans are to have all WASH activities coordinated via the PWSSC. 2.Urban Hygiene Promotion Guidelines-Need to re-align sector ministries’ roles and responsibilities in preparation for the final tabling of the guidelines before the Urban WASH Committee. 3. Rehabilitation of Public Toilets-Notable activity in a number of urban centres in Midlands and Manicaland Provinces. Also in progress is upgrading of sewer and water reticulation systems in the same areas through support from partners. 4.Water Supplies in Urban Areas-Erratic water supplies in Gweru urban due to frequent pump break downs. URBAN WASH SUB-SECTOR:

1.Raw Water Supply-Increased water supply to City of Bulawayo from Mtshabezi Dam following connection of electricity though not yet pumping at full capacity. Gweru’s Gwenhoro Dam capacity is now below 5%. Dam levels in a number of urban centres are dwindling with some supply dams having being decommissioned. 2. Progress at Tokwe- Murkosi Dam-Construction progress going well. General indications are that current holding capacity of the dam is at 25% provided that significant rains are received this year.
