Water for a food-secure world Recommendations for implementing AWM in challenging contexts: 5 countries November 2012

Water for a food-secure world Recommendations Project design needs to build in adequate time and funds for capacity building and implementation activities Project design should be more consultative – with national programs and with communities More multi-sectoral involvement in design and in implementation

Water for a food-secure world Recommendations Find solutions to recurring problems – better integration of lessons learned from past successes and failures Invest more in quality and capacity Learning process should be built into the project Strengthen local institutions

Water for a food-secure world Recommendations Invest more in ‘soft’ components to build technical and local capacity Test new approaches to address gender and other social equity issues: more than quotas More training for how to engage with communities and adapt project design and implementation to complexities of local context

Water for a food-secure world Recommendations Design mechanisms for more downward accountability – M & E Build on existing institutions (water management) and knowledge Continued and targeting engagement after hand-over
