How much water does a household use every week? About 4 m 3 /week.

How do you clean the water? We use untreated surface water. The intake is situated 4 meters under the water. First we have grids to take away bigger branches and fish. Then the water passes through micro-strainers with a small mesh width to clean the water from leaves, smaller branches and algae. After that the water passes through a rapid sand filter to take away smaller particles from the water. And then there is the slow sand filter (outside) which contains more granual sand and here microorganisms are used to eat the organic material in the water. After that we add calcium hydroxide to prevent the water pipes to corrode. We also add sodium hypochlorite to disinfection to prevent bacterial to grow in the water pipes. Now finally the water is ready to use as drinking water.

How much dirty water does the company clean every day? m 3

Is it good for the enviroment to clean the water? Yes. The water we use is a water cycle, starting with rain into the ground, treating it into drinking water, then using it for the the toilet. Then the water comes to the waste water treatment plant. We clean it and then it passes to the river outside the treatment plant. Some water is lifted up into the air and is transformed to rain. And then the cycle process starts again. Remember it the same water we use today as the dinosaurs used.

How much money does the company gain for cleaning the water? We are not allowed to earn any extra money except for what it cost us to run the treatment plant for make the drinking water.

What’s the number of the employees? In the entire company we are about 900 employees and in the sewage treatment works we are about 70 employees with difference kind of jobs which are connected to water (drinking water, waste water, piplines, laboratory analysis and so on)

How is the water used? We all use the water for boiling, flushing our toilets, washing ourselves and clothes, watering flowers etc.

What’s the price of cleaning water? About 10 SEK per 1 m 3 drinking water.

How long have you been working in the water industry? I´ve worked here for almost 25 years.

Who stared the company and when did it happen? Bank director John O Nilson started the formation in 1902 of Linköpings Elektriska Kraft- och belysningsaktiebolag.
