Begin with the End in Mind Habit II Begin with the End in Mind

Personal Mission Statement A personal mission statement is like a personal motto that states what your life is about It is like a blueprint of your life Countries have constitutions, companies have mission statements, people can have personal mission statements

The Great Discovery We are getting ready to work on our personal mission statements As we go through the next slides, you will have a better idea of what inspires you, what you enjoy doing, whom you admire and where you want to take your life!

The Great Discovery Think of a person who has had a positive influence on your life. What qualities does the person have? Imagine that 20 years from now you are surrounded by the most important people in your life. Who are they and what are you doing?

The Great Discovery If a steel beam were placed across two skyscrapers, for what would you be willing to cross? 1 thousand, 1 million, your pet, your brother, fame?

The Great Discovery If you could spend one day in a great library studying anything that you wanted, what would you study? List 10 things you love to do. Singing, dancing, drawing, reading, daydreaming, anything.

The Great Discovery Describe a time when you were deeply inspired. Five years from now, your local paper does a story about you and they want to interview three people… a parent, a brother or sister, and a friend. What would you want them to say about you?

The Great Discovery Think of something that represents you… a rose, a song, an animal…Why does it represent you? If you could spend one hour with anyone who ever lived, who would that be? Why that person? What would you ask?

The Great Discovery Everyone has one or more talent. Which ones below are you good at? Or are there others that aren’t listed? Good with numbers Good with words Athletic Mechanical Artistic Memorizing Building things Sensing things Decision making Speaking Writing Dancing Singing Listening Humorous Sharing Music Trivia

Getting started Method #1- The quote collection Method #2- The Brain Dump Method #3- The Retreat Method #4- The Big Lazy Choose one or combine.

Three Watch-Outs Watch-Out #1- Negative Labels Watch-Out #2- “It’s All Over” Syndrome Watch-Out #3- Wrong Wall

Watch-Out #1- Negative Labels Labels are an ugly form of prejudice Look at the word prejudice, if you break it down, you get pre-judge That means that you are developing an opinion before you have all of the information Don’t let the labels get to you- try to change them, don’t become them

Watch-Out #2-“It’s All Over” Syndrome When you make mistakes, take them in stride Don’t get the “It’s over attitude”, “I can’t do it”, “There’s no use” It’s not all over, everyone makes mistakes The difference is between those who learn from them, and those who do not learn from them

Watch-Out #3- Wrong Wall Have you ever wanted something so badly and when you got it, it’s not as great as you thought it would be? A lot of times we are so worried about some things that we lose sight of what really matters

Watch-Out #3- Wrong Wall We are so busy climbing the ladder of success that we never take time to see if the ladder is leaning against the right wall Having no end in mind is a problem Having the wrong end in mind can be an even bigger one, because it can lead you in the wrong direction

Go for the Goal Once you have your mission in place you will want to set goals Goals are more specific than the mission statement and can help you break the statement into bite-sized pieces If your personal mission statement was to eat a pizza, your goal would be how to slice it

5 Keys to Success Key #1- Count the Cost Key #2- Put it in Pen Key #3- Just Do It!! Key #4- Use Momentous Moments Key #5- Rope Up

Key #1- Count the Cost Many times we set goals and aren’t able to reach them This happens because we have not counted the cost You have to know what is going to be required in order for you to reach the goal

Key #2- Put it in Pen Writing down your goals forces you to be specific You have to know exactly what your goal is; putting it on paper can help to make it clearer

Key #3- Just Do It!! You know what you want to do, now DO IT!!! Once you are fully committed to doing a task, your power to complete it will increase Those who are committed always find a way pg. 96

Key #4- Use Momentous Moments Certain moments in life contain momentum and power Things with beginning and ends carry momentum Ex. The beginning of a new year represents a start, breaking up represents an end Often, tough experiences carry momentum, setbacks and tragedies can often be a springboard for change

Key #4- Use Momentous Moments Moving A new season Graduation Marriage Divorce A new home A promotion A demotion A new look A new day A new school year A life-changing experience Breaking up A new job A new relationship Birth Death An anniversary A new month

Key #5- Rope Up Learn to borrow strength from others Try to find someone else with a goal similar to yours Tell you parents about your goal and get some advice Get help from those who want to help you to succeed The more ropes you put out, the greater your chance is for success p.98

Turning Weaknesses into Strengths People who lack the natural physical, social, or mental gifts they desire must fight that much harder That uphill battle can produce qualities and strengths they couldn’t develop any other way That is how a weakness becomes a strength

Make your life extraordinary Life is short, make the most of it Carpe Diem- Seize the Day! You don’t have to change the world to have a mission “Most of us will never do great things. But we can do small things in great ways.” -Maren Mouritsen
