Australia’s Climate Weather is widely varied. One-third of the land is desert. The desert has scorching temperatures, little water, and almost no vegetation. The largest deserts are in the Outback (remote, rural areas). The remainder of the land has rainforest type weather. There are more plants and animals in these regions. The land is very fertile also. Most of the cities and farms (stations) are in the southeast and southwest.

Australian Wildlife These animals are native to Australia. Australia is home to many of the deadliest kinds of animals--36 kinds. There are 20 types of snakes. There are many kinds of poisonous spiders in Australia. Australia has 516 national parks to protect its unique plants and animals. Kangaroos are very strong, especially in their feet and legs.

The People of Australia Aborigines were the first settlers of Australia. They were early, hardy people who made many rock drawings. They used spears, knives and boomerangs. Great Britain used Australia as a prison colony. In 1901 the people of Australia joined to make Australia a British Commonwealth. Australia is an ethnically diverse population.
