What is Identity Theft  Identity theft occurs when someone uses your personally identifying information, like your name, Social Security number, or credit card number, without your permission, to commit fraud or other crimes.

Statistics  In % of the U.S population were affected by the Identity Theft.  Nearly 40% of all ID Theft victims discovered the misuse of their information within one week of the start of the misuse  11% of all victims said that it had taken 3 or more months to resolve their problems after they discovered that their information was being misused.

Who is the Federal Trade Commission?  The FTC deals with issues that that touch the economic life of every American.  It is the only Federal Agency with both consumer protection and competition jurisdiction in broad sectors of the economy.

Deter, Detect, and Defend  Deter- nothing can guarantee that you won't become a victim of identity theft, you can minimize your risk, and minimize the damage if a problem develops, by making it more difficult for identity thieves to access your personal information.  Detect- The best way to detect identity theft is to monitor your accounts and bank statements each month, and check your credit report on a regular basis.  Defend- Take steps to respond to and recover from identity theft as soon as you suspect it.

Signs That Show You Are A Victim  If your credit card statement includes purchases that you didn’t make.  You receive a credit card that you didn’t apply for.  If you are denied credit or offered less favorable credit.  If you notice some of your mail is missing.  You receive bills from companies that you never dealt with.  You are arrested for a crime you didn’t commit.

Identity Theft Tips  Report lost or stolen credit cards immediately.  Sign new credit cards immediately before anyone else does.  Don’t carry your social security card or birth certificate around.  Closely monitor the expiration dates on your credit cards and contact the issuer if you don’t receive a replacement prior to expiration date.
