Long Vowel Digraphs Vowels can stand for long or short sounds. seal wait goat What vowel sound do you hear in seal? How many vowels do you see in seal? What vowel sounds do you hear in wait and goat? How many vowels do you see in each word?

When I see two vowels in a row, I try saying the long vowel sound of the first vowel. I don't say the second vowel at all. I just need to remember two tricky letters. Both y and w can be consonants or vowels. When they come at the end of a word or syllable, they are vowels, so ay and ow are both vowel pairs.

Vocabulary Strategy for Multiple-Meaning Words Context Clues Sometimes during reading, you may come across a word whose meaning doesn’t make sense. The word might have another meaning. For example, band means “a musical group.” But it also means “a strip of material.” The words around the unknown word may help you figure out another meaning.

Let’s read these words and underline the vowel digraphs. approachdefeatstreamer betweenrainbowdismayoverflow

Read these sentences, point out the vowel digraphs, and say the vowel sound the digraph stands for. When the boat's motor broke, we had to row it. Ellen is not afraid to swim in the bay. Dean, don't ride the bike in the street. Home

1.If you come to a word that doesn't make sense, think about another meaning. 2.Look at nearby words or sentences. Can you figure out another meaning? 3.Try the new meaning in the sentence. Does it make sense? As you read “Money,” look for words that can have more than one meaning. I will ask in a few minutes for you to tell me the words. Home

Daily Task 1 1. With a partner read p. 90– With your partner complete your tri-fold 3. Independently complete RWB p Independently read a leveled reader and take an AR test. 5. With your table complete your World Builder CPA. 6. With your table work on your station. 7. Independently Read books from your bag of books and take AR tests Home

Realism and Fantasy A realistic story tells about something that could happen. A realistic story tells about something that could happen. A fantasy story could never happen. Some stories are mostly realistic, but they may include events that are fantasy. As you read, ask yourself, "Could this really happen?"

Read “How Many Pennies?” on p. 86. Let’s fill in this chart together using information from the story to show some events that are realistic and some that are fantasy. What’s RealWhat’s Not Home
