All Saints’ is a Catholic ceremony (some churches, it also recognizes that many of the anglican and lutheran) celebrated in Poland on the first of November, in honor of all known and unknown saints. The feast of All Saints is largely attributable to the worship of martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the faith in Christ. In the third centry, the tradition spread to transfer the relics of saints to other places, in this way, they wanted to emphasize that the saints are the property of the whole Church.

In 610 Pope Boniface IV received an ancient pagan temple, the Pantheon from the emperor, he ordered to be there. the Pantheon from the emperor, he ordered to be there. Many relics of this building were dedicated to the church of our lady of martyrs. Many relics of this building were dedicated to the church of our lady of martyrs. Since that time, all the martyrs who died on may 1st are remembered. In 731 r. Gregory III moved the ceremony to November 1st and in 837 Pope Gregory in decreed that from now on the first of November was not only dedicated to the memory of the martyrs, but all the saints of the catholic Church.

Nowadays it is rather sad time for reflections upon our life. The first day of November in Poland is a free day, which means that many people travel, even at great distances to visit the graves of their loved ones. The whole familes comes together on cemetery. We talk about past time, pray, and muse. Everybody light candles and put flowers on graves. On that night the cemetery is very colourful, though it is a sentimental and depressing day.

After the All Saints’ Day is the Souls’ Day. We go to cemeteries on this day, to honour the memory of deceased from our families. Families meet each other in houses too.
