Purpose of Event Identify why the Council is adopting the ‘Co- operative Council’ concept Opportunity for delegates to participate in developing and informing our action plan for Glasgow Glasgow City Council

Background Administration’s Manifesto and Strategic Plan contained Commitments to: develop Glasgow as a Co-operative City and; promote and support co-operative, mutual and social enterprise business models in the city through the creation of a Cooperative Development Unit. Glasgow City Council

Co-operatives around the world In the USA, 30,000 co-operatives provide more than 2 million jobs In Spain, the Mondragon Corporation employs over 80,000 people and has assets worth more that 35bn Euros In India, the Kerala sugar cane co-ops have over 50 million members In the UK, there were 6169 co-ops in 2012 with turnover of £36bn. 593 of these are in Scotland (£4.2 bn) In Glasgow, there are approximately 110 co-ops Glasgow City Council
