What is Healthwatch? Greater Manchester’s Local Healthwatch Network Working with BME Communities

Knowledge & Experience of Healthwatch

People’s experiences are mixed 7 out of 10 of us believe we get a good quality service from the NHS and social care services But digging deeper with the public… 1 in 3 of us have experienced, or know someone who has experienced, a serious mistake or abuse, leaving many of us with a deep concern over basic safety standards. More than half of us who have experienced a problem with health or social care in the last three years did nothing to report it. Almost one in four people say that professionals aren’t really interested in what they have to say or do not actively listen.

People know change is needed 94% think NHS and Social Care services could be improved Almost 9 in 10 think the healthcare system needs to change

Health and Social Care Act 2012 “Healthwatch will be the independent consumer champion for the public to provide better outcomes in health for all and in social care for adults.”

Greater Manchester’s Local Healthwatch Network

Functions of local Healthwatch 1.Advice, Information and signposting 2.Engagement and Consultation 3.Influence and Involvement 4.Scrutiny and reporting 5.Advocacy & Complaints

BME Health Inequalities BME communities generally have worse health than the overall population, although the patterns of ethnic health inequalities are very diverse. Ethnic health inequalities result from many interlinking factors, of which the relative poverty of BME groups is probably the most important.

Use of health services by BME groups Most BME groups access primary care at rates as high as the general population (in relation to need). Some evidence of lower access to hospital care among BME groups Eg South Asians have been found to have lower access to care for coronary heart disease Rates of dissatisfaction with NHS services are higher among some BME groups than their White British counterparts. Eg South Asians report poorer experiences as hospital inpatients,
