OFSTED Subsidiary guidance 2014 – EYFS/KS1 Assessment in EYFS must show… - Starting points - Challenging next steps - Progress made through EYFS - Progress into KS1 “typical level of development for their age”, below and above Typical and rapid progress Expect ELG in R to attain L2B+ in yr 2 Expect 3 points to attain at least level 2a, more likely level 3 Typical progress in nursery = 3 jumps (In reception = 2 jumps) a) There is much reference to starting points from the end of reception so it would be advisable to start assessing pupils in terms of the NC as soon as they start Yr1 in September. Some schools already do this and reassess pupils in September. One suggestion made is that when the EYFS assessments are completed at the end of Reception in July, a dual assessment is also made using NC levels. This makes a lot of sense in terms of getting to know the pupils well from the Yr1 teacher’s point of view but their assessment level may be higher in July than in September due to the summer break. To show better progress, a September assessment may be more advisable.

Judging “Exceeding”…….. To judge whether a child’s learning and development is “exceeding”, practitioners should use the best fit model and be confident that the child has moved beyond the “expected” level. Practitioners should…. Consider KS1 attainment targets and level descriptors on DfE website Refer to the “exceeding” descriptors in annex 2 Discuss with year 1 teachers Internal moderation in spring/early summer is advised. The exceeding statements are not an attempt to describe achievement in year 1, they are merely a set of statements that aim to illustrate attainment beyond what is normally expected for a five year old. Therefore they are to be treated as part of an EYFS assessment only.  Arrangements for the “exceeding” level are interim and subject to change once the national curriculum review is complete.

Progress in KS1 Letter was sent to schools in January advising early assessment in year 1 Transition conversation is essential EYFSCo briefing (22nd May) and Transition into Year 1 course (10th July) to explore links between EYFS Profile and new NC

Formative Tracking using development matters Summative/Statutory EYFSP 22-36 – emerging - developing - secure 30-50 – emerging 40-60 – emerging - secure (ELG) Exceeding – into NC “Emerging” …1 ELG…“Expected” …2 “Exceeding” …3
