USING VIDEO FOR SPEAKING ACTIVITIES Video Workshop Lisa Doherty English Language Fellow

Why is video good for EFL students? Visual Auditory Current Motivating Gives lots of context Teaches cultural points Creates real situations for discussion and to practice grammar points

Advice Make sure the video is short(2-4 minutes) Prepare something to go along with the video(vocabulary, exercise, questions, etc.) Repeat the scene 2-3 times Remember your focus: vocabulary, grammar structure, culture, etc. Pre-teach vocabulary *Remember the idea is not to show a movie in class. Your job is to manipulate a piece of film so that your students communicate in English.

How do you make a sandwich? First you slice the bread. Then you spread some kind of sauce on the bread. Next you put on a piece of lettuce. After that you put on some sliced tomatoes. Then you can put your choice of meat. Don’t forget to put a slice of cheese. Finally, put the other slice of bread on top and enjoy!
