We are members of one body. Priestley uses the inspector to try to make the Birlings inspect themselves and reflect on how they behaved towards Eva Smith. He wants to shame them into admitting they did a bad thing, in the hope that they will change and take responsibility for their behaviour towards others. ‘We are members of one body’ Priestley uses the inspector as his mouthpiece: to speak his views. He believes that all people are part of the community; we are all members of the human race. Therefore, we need to care for each other and help those in need, not turn our backs on them. He is talking about social responsibility. Priestley also talking to the audience. He wants them to listen to his message; inspecting themselves and changing their behaviour too, like Sheila and Eric.
