3 His life  He was born in Biscay, in  He was with the Republicans in the Spanish Civil War.  He was assigned to a parish in Arrasate-Mondragon in 1941 after being in prison.  He set up the Polytechnic School, now Mondragon Eskola Politeknikoa. now Mondragon Eskola Politeknikoa.  In 1956, five young people from this school established the first production initiative of what today is MCC: ULGOR.  He died in 1976.

M.C.C.MONDRAGON CO-OPERATIVE CORPORATION CO-OPERATIVE CORPORATION  In 1959 a credit co-operative, the Caja Laboral Popular-Euskadiko Kutxa( a co-operative bank), was founded  The following years saw the birth of a large number of co- operatives. It was during this period that Fagor Electronica, Fagor Ederlan and Danobat (among others) were set up.  During the seventies, a number of new co-operatives were set up. Much progress was also made in the field of research and development.

5  The eighties were mainly characterised by the development of the Mondragon Co-operative Corporation (MCC) in response to the challenge posed by the creation of the European Economic Community and the globalisation of the economy.  During the nineteen nineties, prompted by MCC, the University of Mondragon was set up as a private university aimed at satisfying the needs of local companies.  Currently, MCC has over 60 industrial plants abroad.  Today, half a century after its foundation, the Mondragon Co- operative Corporation is the largest business corporation in the Basque Country and the seventh largest in Spain.

13 Why should be Arizmendi the European Hero?  He boosted cooperativeness. He spread the idea of being employer and employee at the same time.  Mondragon corporation is owned by their worker-members and power is based on the principle of one person, one vote.  MCC is the world leader in the co-operative movement.
