L Test Construction anguage A report by: –Ma. Claironmie Besto –Darling Pearl Ranalan

Testing Should be – be positive experiences – build a person’s confidence and become learning experiences – bring out the best in students

Testing Shouldn’t be – be degrading – be artificial – be anxiety-provoking

What are tests for? – Inform strengths and weaknesses – Motivate learners to review and consolidate – Guide the development of the process – Create a sense of accomplishment – Determine if the objectives have been achieved – Encourage improvement

Language Assessment aims to create – to create more authentic, intrinsically motivating assessment procedures that are appropriate for their context & designed offer constructive feedback to students

These critical questions must be answered What is the purpose of the test? What are the objectives of the test? How will the test specifications reflect both the purpose and objectives. How will the test tasks be selected and the separate items arranged? What kind of scoring, grading and feedback is expected.

A set of techniques, procedures or items. To qualify as a test, the method must be explicit and structured. Like;

Example of a Multiple-choice questions Outcome: Identifies the meaning of a term. Reliability is the same as: a. consistency. b. relevancy. c. representativeness. d. usefulness.

Example of an Essay prompts – Prompt 1 Think carefully about the issue presented in the following excerpt and the assignment below. What determines success in life is not intelligence or talent, but character: those qualities gained both from living in an honorable and straightforward manner and from learning to deal with disappointment and hardship. Without character, an individual has no hope of true success. Even when competing against opponents of considerable intelligence or strength, those individuals who possess strong character will ultimately win. Assignment: Does a person’s character determine that person’s success in life? Plan and write an essay in which you develop your point of view on this issue. Support your position with reasoning and examples taken from your reading, studies, experience, or observations.

Examples of an oral interview questions Why should we hire you? Tell me about your self How are you going to help the company

A means for offering the test- taker some kind of result. If an instrument does not specify a form of reporting measurement, then that technique cannot be defined as a test.

Scoring may be like the followings Classroom-based short answer essay test may earn the test-taker a letter grade accompanied by the instructor’s marginal comments. Large-scale standardized tests provide a total numerical score, a percentile rank, and perhaps some sub- scores.

Test measures performance, but results imply test- taker’ ability or competence. Some language tests measure one’s ability to perform language: To speak, write, read or listen to a subset of language. Some others measure a test-taker’s knowledge about language: Defining a vocabulary item, reciting a grammatical rule or identifying a rhetorical feature in written discourse.

It means measuring the desired criterion and not including other factors. – Proficiency tests: – Classroom-based performance tests: – A well-constructed test is an instrument that provides an accurate measure of the test taker’s ability within a particular domain.
