The Haiti Earthquake By Sean Frost 8G

What is the country like compared to ours? Here is a picture of the United Kingdom using Google Earth. It is taken 2000km away from the surface. Now look at Haiti with the same scale. It is tiny. It also only has a population of 10 million people, we have 60 million

Where did it happen? The epicentre of the earthquake was in a town called Leogane 20 miles west of Port-au-Prince

When did it happen? The Haiti earthquake with a magnitude of 7 was at 16:53:09 local time which is also (21:53:09 UTC). This happened on Tuesday 12 th January 2010 The earthquake occured at a depth of 13km The united states geological survey also recorded 14 aftershocks with a magnitude of

How big was it? The earthquake was very big. It was 7 in magnitude. Some witnesses say there was a tsunami wave near the town of Leogane It has been recorded as The sixth deadliest earthquake ever.

What caused it? The Haiti earthquake happened at the fault line that goes through Haiti. It was the strongest earthquake in Haiti for 200 years This is the fault line

What affect did it have on the environment? In one article it says ‘Surprisingly, no large industrial spills have been found during initial post-quake rescue efforts It says somewhere else that between 40% - 50% of the buildings in Port au Prince fell from the earthquake. This produced lots of debris that eventually ended up in the environment

What affect did it have on the people? The red cross say that the earthquake affected over 3 million people and killed almost 100,000 people. It also destroyed many homes and a lot of the buildings in the capital of Haiti, Port au Prince.

How did people first respond to it? In the United States of America they said after it happened that they would only help to save lives in Haiti for the next 72 hours. When the Americans arrived they said it was horrible. They said they were literally stepping over bodies.

How have people been affected in the long term? Apparently the earthquake has made 1 million people homeless In the end it also killed 230,000 people After a few days they brought in emergency workers to rebuild main water lines and main electricity lines.

Are there still any problems to be solved as a direct result of the earthquake? There is now a long term health problem from the earthquake. Because of the bad conditions it is easy for bad diseases to spread. It will take a long while to rebuild because Haiti is a very poor country. Although Europeans have given them 3 million Euros and the US have given them about 5 million $.
