44 (0) DV8 Health & Safety in Sports By Vaughan Hencher Gary Stevens Colin Williams

44 (0) Pershore Group of Colleges (Holme Lacy & Pershore Colleges) has a large number of sports students. These students are not normally the ‘high achievers’ in academic subjects, preferring playing their sport, rather than ploughing through paperwork. Subject Area: BTEC National Diploma course in Performance & Excellence year-olds

44 (0) For our project we intend to create interactive materials to assist students within the group who have a wide range of learning styles to use via the VLE. These materials are to either help them within the curriculum area. We intend to deviate away from the normal methods of teaching and assessment, and to introduce new learning styles that should appeal to the students. Aims:

44 (0) We intend to convert or create new learning materials for use interactively through a VLE. Health & Safety is a ‘dry’ subject that is difficult for the students to engage with. This in turn means that the tutors have more problems with the students during the lesson as they are more easily distracted away from the subject. The project will be evaluated by the participation of the learner. Objectives:

44 (0) We intend to deviate away from the normal methods of teaching and assessment, and to introduce new learning styles that should appeal to the students. We aimed to produce new interactive materials in new untested styles, that would appeal to and engage the learner We wish to use the VLE to deliver and assess the students as much as possible. DV8 is about improving learners’ ability to learn by deviating from normal modes of delivery. This is a more friendly fun way to learn and encompasses different learning styles. What we intended to do via the project:

44 (0) The project will be fully evaluated by students’ participation. Due to the fact that the students are not due to start this module yet, some of the evaluation is being performed by students on other courses who do not see some of the interactive resources as ‘learning’ The VLE allows a log of who is using the materials to be recorded. Evaluation

44 (0) Difficulties Sickness meant that we did not start the project until November Staff shortages have made it difficult to get cover to enable the practitioners to progress the project within the scheduled action plan. Lack of reply for permission from the makers of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire has caused a complete rebuild of the ‘flash’ game.

44 (0) Pedagogy The project was created to enhance the learning experience for students, both within the College and their Curriculum area. It should make it easier for them to engage and learn the subject of Health & Safety in Sport. The students should be able to learn at their own pace and not necessarily within the normal confines offered by the usual methods of teaching They should get ‘more out of it’, more fulfilment.
