Today’s Directions Get out your homework: Moving Day and Food for Thought if you did not turn it in yet. Get out your notebook and label your table of contents: Globes, Hemispheres, Latitude and Longitude Have out a correcting pen ready to check. Be sure your name is on your paper!

Globes, Hemispheres, Latitude and Longitude Globe - a sphere model that represents the Earth Hemisphere - half of the sphere The Prime Meridian divides the earth into the Eastern and Western Hemispheres. The equator divides the earth into the Northern and Southern Hemispheres.

Latitude Latitude lines are imaginary lines on the earth's surface. They run east and west around the globe and tell you your distance north or south of the Equator. Latitude lines are also called parallels. They are always equal distance apart. Think of latitude like the rungs of a ladder (ladder sounds a lot like latitude). Latitude lines run east and west, but they tell how far up (north) you can go or how far down (south) you can go. Equator - 0 degrees Arctic Circle - 66 1/2 Degrees N Antarctic Circle - 66 1/2 Degrees S Tropic of Cancer - 23 1/2 Degrees N Tropic of Capricorn - 23 1/2 Degrees S

Latitude

Longitude Longitude lines are imaginary lines on the earth's surface that run from pole to pole around the globe and tell you your distance east or west from the Prime Meridian. Longitude lines are also called meridians. Remember the most famous longitude line is the Prime Meridian When you think of longitude, think of long, tall telephone poles (because longitude lines run from pole to pole). Longitude lines run north and south, but they tell how far east you can go or how far west you can go.

Longitude

Latitude and Longitude Latitude and Longitude is like a grid or graphing on a plane. When given both latitude and longitude, you are given coordinates. They are the address of a location

Homework “Practicing Latitude and Longitude” WS Look over your notes for our next class period. You will be having an in class assignment!

Exit Card On your note card, Write your name on the front. Which lines run north and south (pole to pole) and measure east and west of the Prime Meridian? Which lines run east and west and measure north and south of the Equator? Put your cards in the basket when done!
