The Lovely Bones Objective: to consider how dramatic moments are crafted
Starter In pairs, generate as many ideas as you can for an extremely tense passage in a book e.g. a woman being stalked by a man with assault on his mind/people stuck in the lift of a burning building
Success Criteria You use short (simple or minor) sentences when writing your dialogue Exclamatory interjections should be used in dialogue e.g. ‘Oh my God!’ Use elliptical sentences (where words are left out or sentences end mid sentence) Watch your time line –tense scenes usually take place in a short amount of time Keep reporting clauses to a minimum to build pace Since you’re keeping dialogue to a minimum, additional details about character’s thoughts/actions etc should be provided through an omniscient narrator. As always, ‘show’ rather than ‘tell’ your reader. Now, write one of the scenes you crafted in your starter
