THE FURTHER MATHEMATICS NETWORK Let Maths take you Further …

The ‘Access to Further Mathematics’ pilot project In 2000 the Gatsby Charitable Foundation funded the and original ‘Enabling Access to Further Mathematics’ run by MEI. Initially five Lead Centres were involved. By academic year 2004/5 there were 11 Centres, at various stages of development, tutoring a total of over 200 students. Dr Challoner’s Grammar School (Bucks), Exeter College (Devon), Hertfordshire LEA, University of East Anglia/Norfolk LEA, University of Leicester, University of Loughborough, UWE (Bristol), University of Leeds, University of Manchester, University of Warwick, University of Wolverhampton Let Maths take you Further…

The Vision of the pilot project The country is covered by groups of schools, colleges and universities, working together to offer Further Mathematics to students in their area. Every student who would benefit from Further Mathematics will have access to study it, at least to AS level. This means ALL students who intend to study for a maths-related degree (engineering, sciences, etc, as well as Maths itself) Let Maths take you Further…

Students’ performance in their standard Mathematics AS/A-level was enhanced. Students learnt to learn more independently. Students had the opportunity to meet and work with students from other schools and colleges who are keen on Mathematics. Feedback from students and teachers was extremely positive Did it work? Let Maths take you Further…

The success of the pilot project meant that it was cited positively in Adrian Smith’s ‘Making Mathematics Count’ report. As a result, the Government is funding MEI over the next 5 years to set up a national ‘Further Mathematics Network’. Did it work? The students’ results compared well with those achieved by students studying Further Mathematics ‘traditionally’ – see Let Maths take you Further…

What is the Further Mathematics Network? The Further Mathematics Network is a national expansion of the Access to Further Mathematics pilot project. The aim is to have 46 Further Mathematics Centres operating by Christmas 2006, to support Further Maths across the whole of England. Currently 38 Further Mathematics Centres are in operation. Let Maths take you Further…

What is a Further Mathematics Centre? A Further Mathematics Centre is a collaboration between institutions, which could involve one or more of colleges, LEAs, schools and universities. A Further Mathematics Centre’s main function is to facilitate access to Further Mathematics in its region. Each Further Mathematics Centre is managed by a Further Mathematics Centre Manager. Let Maths take you Further…

School University L.E.A. College The Further Mathematics Centre Schools Colleges Students Schools Colleges Students Further Mathematics Centre Manager The Centres have a regional identity as part of the National Network. They do not ‘belong’ to a single institution. Let Maths take you Further…

Further Mathematics Network mission statement The Further Mathematics Network aims to give every student who could benefit from studying Further Mathematics the opportunity to do so. The Further Mathematics Network will work to increase the number of students studying AS/A level Mathematics and Further Mathematics. The Further Mathematics Network aims to provide training and support to teachers of AS/A level Mathematics and Further Mathematics. Let Maths take you Further…

The effect the Network can have on Mathematics The Further Mathematics Network, combined with the new structure for AS/A-level Further Mathematics can boost the numbers of students taking AS/A-level Mathematics and Further Mathematics enormously. Let Maths take you Further…

The effect the Network can have on Mathematics All students who would benefit from AS/A level Further Mathematics will be able to study it. More students will be encouraged to study STEM subjects at university. Universities will be able to ask for Further Mathematics explicitly in their Offers, which will increase demand from students to study Further Mathematics. Let Maths take you Further…

= Existing centres from pilot = Planned by Sept 2006 = New FM Centres 2005/6 How is the Network growing so far? Let Maths take you Further…

The effect the Network can have on Mathematics The result will be a significant increase in the standard of pre-university Mathematics. Links with school pupils at Key Stage 4 will boost numbers choosing to study AS/A-level Mathematics. The FM Centres will help facilitate CPD in level 3 Mathematics. Let Maths take you Further…
