Scale Maps have to be drawn smaller than real life to fit on a piece of paper. A scale shows you how much smaller they are than in real life. Measuring distances on a map and then placing them on a scale tells you the real distance between places. Every map should have a scale line.

What if the distances are not in a straight line? The same method as before can be applied but you do have to split the route into sections, and turn you strip of paper at each bend.
