Nottinghamshire Public Sector Compact Elected Members Meeting Nottinghamshire County Council Feb 2010 Increasing Apprenticeships with support from the Compact plus “Our Achievements in 2009 and looking ahead to 2010” A presentation by Chris Donkin Facilitator for the Nottinghamshire Public Sector Compact

Addressing the Apprenticeship Issue The Compact has a key role to play in increasing the number of Apprentices employed in the public sector An often quoted stat is that: ‘26% of workers are employed in the public sector – 10% of the Apprenticeships are in the sector’ During the Compact’s short life it has been instrumental in increasing the number of Apprentices employed in the sector.

What we are doing to help … The Compact has hosted good practice events, developed Case Studies and has provided peer support for organisations that have under-developed approaches to taking on Apprentices

Apprenticeships – Good Practice Events The Skills Pledge in Action Event The Embedding Apprenticeships Programmes Event - NAS - The Nottinghamshire Network - NHS in Nottinghamshire - Nottingham City Homes (the ‘one in a million’ scheme)

Apprenticeships – Case Studies The Compact has published Apprenticeship Case Studies on the web site ( Nottinghamshire County NHS Nottingham City Homes East Midlands Ambulance Service … and from elsewhere in the East Midlands City of Lincoln Council Bolsover District Council

Apprenticeships – Peer Support The Compact has arranged buddies for those organisations seeking to increase their intake of Apprentices Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service Nottinghamshire Police Bilborough College …..all receiving peer support

Compact Successes in 2009 At our January Steering Group meeting we took stock of progress: We now have 37 public sector organisations that we are working with committed to the Skills Pledge Most of our member organisations have now got an ‘Apprenticeship Scheme’ and we are actively supporting those who don’t We continue to host good practice dissemination events (e.g. in November a ‘Skills Pledge in Action’ event – last week an ‘Embedding Apprenticeship Schemes’ event) We have developed a ‘Code of Practice’ to ensure that organisations contracting with the public sector share our commitment to training Nineteen of our organisations have committed to a LEP agreement We are actively exploring ways of working together to address the Leadership and Management agenda by collaborative Coaching and Mentoring arrangements

Other Compact successes in 2009 We have provided organisations with underdeveloped approaches to Apprenticeships with peer ‘buddies’ to offer additional support We have developed our web site into a ‘content rich’ platform with news, resources and minutes of key meetings available for reference and download We are making appropriate connections with the ‘Future Jobs Fund’ to ensure that the Compact plays a role in addressing the NEET agenda We have established good working links with TUC Unionlearn to help us address workforce development issues We are developing a Members’ Charter to get high level commitment to working together to address the particular challenges that face the public sector

Moving Forward The Compact has a key role to play in the public sector and local economic development We intend to continue to use our Charter to realise the potential of the Compact - ensuring senior management commitment - engaging across the public sector Our aim is to respond locally, connect regionally We hope to attract funding to continue and build on the work of the Compact
