The NCETM: The future for CPD

Thank you: Colin Matthews Director for Development NCETM The purpose of today is to engage in some dialogue with you about what the new mathematics education support landscape will look like from September 2011 To seek your views on how the NCETM can continue to be an effective player.

…………. and introduction Scene-setting –NCETM’s wider work –Teaching Schools and the new landscape –NCETM CPD Standard and where it fits –Improvement and Excellence award: Kite-marking

The NCETM Standard 1. A single standard including quality indicators associated with NCETM’s three ‘strands’ of effective continuous professional development: broadening and deepening mathematics content knowledge, developing mathematics-specific pedagogy, which includes appreciating how learners engage with mathematics and likely obstacles to progression; embedding effective mathematics pedagogy in practice. 2. A workable registration and submission process 3. Achievement of the Standard for CPD by many of the providers in the initial pilot; since risen to Completion of the NCETM Standard ensures provider simultaneously meets TDA CoP

New Names… Teaching Schools and NLEs Local Leaders in Education Specialist Leaders in Education Academies Retail market for PD Hub Schools E-Bac Wolf Report.

More about the Standard Changed role for NCETM field force Feedback process for all PD attendees. Expressions of Interest. Stage 1 submissions. Monitoring of provision, a 15% sample. Re-submission process starts September 2011.

Group Activity In small groups discuss the key changes and implications as you perceive them arising from the closure of the National Strategies and the establishment of the “Teaching Schools” era. Are there other key developments we should be preparing for?

DfE Executive agencies National College of school leadership Training and Development Agency The Standard promotes equality of opportunity and consistency of information flow about provision. The NCETM Events calendar is a useful outlet for CPD events

Group activity How can and should the NCETM support PD providers in the changing landscape to provide an equality of opportunity for all schools and teachers? If the NCETM maintains a “Directory of Providers” what might this “look like”? Is it a good idea? (VOTE)

NCETM Futures…….. Thank you
