Nazis in Power Part 2: Terror and Force How do we know the Nazis needed terror to keep Germans in check?

This graph shows some of the parties people could vote for in Germany If you look at the brown section, you will see that the Nazis never had more Reichstag seats than all the other parties combined

July 1932 Election Nazis gained 13.7 million votes 37.3% vote 230 seats in the Reichstag November 1932 Election 12 million votes 33.1% vote 196 seats

March 1933 Election 17 million votes, 44% vote, 288 seats Still no majority (50%+) RIGGED ELECTION KPD BANNED SPD INTIMIDATED

What do these figures show? Although some people were voting for the Nazis, more than half the population were not The Nazis did not have a majority share of the vote Hitler never won an election – even with the main opposition banned

No Majority - Analysis The Nazis were well aware that the majority of German people had not voted for them It was clear to the Nazis that some force would be necessary to ensure the cooperation of the German people the Nazis would need a totalitarian regime to stay in powerThe fact that most Germans didn’t want a Nazi government meant that the Nazis would need a totalitarian regime to stay in power

Nazis in Power Essay Plan we will now add today’s information on to the plan for this essay No Majority KU:Nazis did not have a majority of support (44%), more people disliked the Nazis than supported them 1933 election rigged in Nazis favour (KPD Banned, SPD arrested or scared) yet still no Nazi majority A: Nazis knew majority Of Germans did not support them so force would have to be used to ensure their cooperation Terror/ Force
