Something to keep in mind Follow Your Curiosity I have no special talent. I am only passionately curious.

Perseverance is Priceless “It's not that I'm so smart; it's just that I stay with problems longer.”

The Imagination is Powerful “Imagination is everything. It is the preview of life's coming attractions. Imagination is more important than knowledge.” “The true sign of intelligence is not knowledge, but imagination.” Are you exercising your “imagination muscles” daily, don’t let something as powerful as your imagination lie dormant lie dormant.

Make Mistakes Discover the power of making mistakes. I’ve said this before, and I’ll say it again, if you want to succeed, triple the amount of mistakes that you make.

Create Value “Strive not to be a success, but rather to be of value. Labour to be valuable and success will chase you down”

education What does it mean to you

Definitions Derived from the Latin word educo which translates to – I lead forth, – I take out, – I raise up

With this definition in mind…. Should our planning not cover the curriculum but uncover it?

What do we want? If we want pupils to be successful, responsible and confident learners they need to come across inspirational teachers Our expectations need to be high enough to allow the learners to take more responsibility for their own learning We need to believe that deep learning is better than coverage

Our pupils need to Be challenged and get it wrong…….and then get over it! Work collaboratively so they can influence each other Recognise when they have a problems and take responsibility for dealing with it

When were you last motivated ? When did you last motivate someone ?

When were you last inspired? When did you last inspire someone?

What do inspirational teachers do?

Breath life into our children The teachers we remember are the ones that leaves some of their breath inside us

Model what you want Talk about what you want

What do the following words mean Values Attitudes habits

Taps: When are we tap like teachers? What are our characteristics? What are the characteristics of tap like children Drains: What are the characteristics of drain like children Can we be drains sometimes?

What can we do to help our school develop even more of a buzz? Divergent thinking

Be creative…… To make the buzz happen we must ….. Could be a recipe Could be a bean stalk Could be a journey Could be a treasure hunt Share your presentation once completed

How do you feel about learning? How do you make me feel about learning?

Get into their heads but leave footprints in their hearts

A challenge!

Matthew Syed is a sports journalist and broadcaster. He has been an English table tennis international, and was the English number one for many years. He was three times the Men's Singles Champion at the Commonwealth Table Tennis Championships and also competed for Great Britain in two Olympic Games.

One minute sweep around your table...

Your group has been given a selection of readings from the first section of the book. Some are longer then others – please select one each. (If there are more readings than group members you may choose to leave readings out or perhaps would be happy to read more than 1!)

On your own: Read your extract(s), annotating and highlighting the text where you feel appropriate to respond to the question: What are the key idea(s) from the extract that you have read?

With your group Share the key ideas from each extract How might the ideas from your shared reading have impacted upon you when you were at school yourselves? How might the ideas impact upon your learning and teaching now? What are the implications for promoting increased motivation and perseverance in our learners?

Now decide how you will present these implications and your ideas and thinking to the whole group in a memorable way. You have 20 minutes to prepare and 2 minutes to present With your group
