POST-16 INFORMATION EVENING

 A desire to use talent, enthusiasm, & interest to gain a valuable academic qualification.  Motivation and interest to have a deeper understanding of sport.  Ideally be AT LEAST a school performer in at least one sport.  Participate regularly in your sport.  Have 5 grade A*-C at GCSE including English Language and at least a grade C in GCSE PE or Merit in BTEC First Extended Certificate in Sport (if studied).  It would be helpful if you had a GCSE grade C in Additional Science

 Sport is a very important aspect in today’s society - bridge cultural gaps, resolve conflict, and educate people in a way that few other activities can – whole person – social side, physical side, health, cognitive and creative.  Enjoyable.  Valuable & Worthwhile.  Opportunity To Progress To Higher Education – Sports Courses including Physical Education and sports science or physiotherapy.

 Physical Education combines well with most other A levels, including Psychology, Sociology, Physics, Biology, History, Business Studies and Geography.

What does A Level PE Consist of?

 PHED 1 Opportunities for & the effects of leading a healthy lifestyle.  Consists of the following: ◦ APPLIED EXERCISE PHYSIOLOGY ◦ SKILL ACQUISITION & PSYCHOLOGY ◦ SOCIO-CULTURAL ISSUES & PARTICIPATION ◦ THEORETICAL APPLICATION TO PRACTICAL WORK  60% of AS marks

 PHED 2 Analysis & evaluation of physical activity  Demonstration of CORE SKILLS as a performer ( in your best sport), official or coach  Assessed on specific criteria in TWO scenarios 40% of AS marks

 PHED 3 Optimising performance & evaluating contemporary issues within sport  EXERCISE PHYSIOLOGY  SPORTS PSYCHOLOGY  CONTEMPORARY ISSUES 30% of total A-Level marks

 PHED 4 Optimising practical performance in a competitive situation  PERFORM (in your best sport)  ANALYSIS OF COMPETITIVE PERFORMANCE (written report where weaknesses are identified, suggested causes are discussed & corrective measures are presented) 20% of total A-Level marks
