Formalised GT training in the Liverpool Lab Fiona Coyne Regional Molecular Genetics Laboratory Liverpool

Our training strategy To try and start training in sample receipt and DNA extraction (not always possible) Start with the most least technically complex disorders on the group Give new staff a limited workload at first Regularly fill in competency sheets Perform witness audits on selected tasks Regular meetings with senior GT and training officer.

Certificate of Accreditation Our training programme has recently been approved to provided training in Molecular Genetics for Genetic Technologists from October 2009 to September 2014

Why start with DNA extraction? Gives staff the opportunity to find out how the laboratory works learn about the laboratory database learn how to extract DNA before using the DNA in downstream processes

Training in DNA extraction Training given initially by senior GT Assistance given until new member of staff is competent. Continue to give assistance where necessary. Witness audit carried out on Chemagen DNA extraction system at the end of the first month. Refresher training given on next rotation into DNA extraction (after 4 months)

After DNA extraction The new GT will be assigned to one of the technical groups they will usually be trained initially by the lead scientist on that group And then may be supervised by the same scientist or one of the GTs staff experienced in that technique

Monitoring of Performance As different techniques are carried, out the appropriate competency forms are filled in. It is the responsibility of the GT to make sure these forms are completed. Columns are for Technique demonstrated, competent (filled in by GT) Competent (signed off by trainer) Witness audit carried out (if appropriate)

GT Competency form cont.

Range of competency sheets

Training period Under the most recent rota system It will take 24 months to go round the whole rota once (this includes 4 separate months in DNA extraction 4 separate months in Aneuploidy screening After this time the competency sheets would be reviewed and any incomplete sections would be addressed.

In addition to competencies… Tutorials These are given by the lead scientists of each group. As soon as possible after the GT joins the group tutorials in the form of powerpoint presentations are given on each disorder. Journal Club GTs attend and participate if they wish Directorate seminars GTs attend as many of these as possible.

Further developments We are about to set up a GT seminar group This will involve GTs being involved in choosing the subject Researching the information Presenting back to the other GTs

The future… As from 5 October 2009 We have 2 PTP trainees joining our department as part of the pilot scheme We are looking forward to the challenge! We may incorporate some of this scheme into our existing one

Summary Training in Liverpool Consists of Working through a list of competencies Some common to many techniques e.g. PCR Some specialized e.g. Pyrosequencing Interaction with the Training officer, senior GT, other clinical scientists and GTs. Seminars and Journal club
