Education in ENGLAND  Is compulsory for all children between 5 – 18.  The school year begins on 1 st of September.  Students aren’t evaluated by marks but by grades (A to F). A is the best and F is the worst.  There are two basic types of education facilities  state school ( no fees)  public schools

Stages of education  Pre-school education  Primary education  Secondary education  Further education  Higher education

Pre-school education  A nursery school is for children between the ages of 3 and 5.  Staffed by qualified teachers and other professionals.  Children are prepared for primary school by educational plays.

Primary education  Primary education is divided into  Infant schools (for children between 5 and 7)  Children learn basics of reading, writing and arithmetic.  Junior schools (for children between 7 and 11)  Academic subjects become more formal, the time is also spent on doing informal work, especially art and handicrafts.  Many primary schools practice “streaming”, which means that there are parallel classes learning at different speeds:  a) A Stream (for children who learn the quickest)  b) B Stream (for average pupils)  c) C Stream ( for slower children)  The school day usually lasts from 9 am until 3 pm.

Curriculum  All maintained schools in England are required to follow the National Curriculum, which is made up of twelve subjects. The core subjects are English, Mathematics and Science. This subjects are compulsory for all students aged 5 to 16.  A range of other subjects, known as foundation subjects, are compulsory at one or more Key Stages:  Art & Design  Citizenship  Design & Technology  Geography  History  Information & Communication Technology  Modern Foreign Languages  Music  Physical Education

Secondary education  Is provided by this types of schools:  GRAMMAR SCHOOL - traditional literary and scientific education, prepares children for entry to universities ( to the age of 18).  SECONDARY MODERN SCHOOL – general education, including much instruction of a practical sort, when children leave the school they go to work.  SECONDARY TECHNICAL SCHOOL – technical education related to industry, commerce or agriculture.  COMPREHENSIVE SCHOOL – for children of all abilities, provide wide range of secondary education for most of the children in a district.  At the age of 16, pupils who want to leave school, take an examination in 8-10 subjects. They pass the examination:  a) G.C.S.E. (General Certificate of Secondary Education) = to find a job  b) G.C.E. (general certificate of education) = to continue their studies

Further education  Further Educational College  Many students decide to leave secondary school at the age of 16 and go to Further Education College.  Colleges provide courses of vocational training (engineering, cooking, hairdressing) as well as a range of A –levels subjects.  Sixth Form College  students aged 16 to 19 typically study for advanced school-level qualifications, such as A-levels and the International Baccalaureate Diploma, or school-level qualifications such as GCSEs.

Higher education  Students enter university at the age of 18.  Bachelor‘s degree – first degree, usually for 3 years  Master‘s degree – first degree, usually for 4 years - upgraduate bachelor‘s degree  Doctorate- take at least 3 years  The most well-known universities:  a) the university of Cambridge  b) the university of Oxford  c) the university of Glasgow
